CHARACTER IS THE KEY OF LIFE

Good character is important for success in your life, because it

determines how well you can achieve your goals, whether others
want to deal with you, and how well you fit in your groups. When
you work hard and are determined to achieve your goals, you can
become more successful and confident in what you do. When you
deal with other people fairly and honestly and show consideration
for them, they will want to deal with you and even help you achieve
your goals. By following the laws and rules of society, your culture,
and your organizations, you will fit in and be accepted.

Good character is often something a person builds over time. When

you hear about "building good character" or a "character building
moment", it means that you are facing a challenge and you need to
look to your good values, make a good choice, and persevere (work
through it even though it's hard). A moment when you have a
difficulty to overcome can be a character building moment because it
helps you prove to yourself that you can make a good choice that is
in-line with your values. All the character building moments in your
life help you grow into a person with good character.

ACHIEVING GOALS
When you have good or positive character traits of working hard and
being conscientious about what you do, you are more apt to succeed
in achieving your goals. This, in turn, can result in increased
confidence in your ability to achieve those goals. However, if you
have character flaws, such as tending to procrastinate and being
careless in what you do, you are more apt to miss out or not achieve
your goals. In addition, if you are doing work for another person, he
or she wants to get things done properly and in a timely manner.
Acting lazy or not doing what needs to be done makes a negative
impression of your character to the other person. The result can be
missed opportunities, because of your reputation of having poor
character traits. It can sorely affect your success at work or in
business. Jane was invited to a pot-luck party at a neighbor's house,
where each person was to bring something to eat. Dinner was to be
served at 6 pm. However, Jane was late and did not get to the party
until 7:30. She also brought something that needed to be heated up
for 30 minutes.

Her careless and inconsiderate actions were not appreciated by

anyone at the party, and they judged her character as not very good.
None of the people ever invited Jane to another gathering.

Others judge your personal character by your performance.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Your reputation concerning how you treat other people precedes
you. It can colour the perception others have of your character
before they must interact with you.

You may have character flaws that turn off other people in wanting
to deal with you.

Sarah told Carly that Beth was often dishonest and would sometimes
steal.

Because of this reputation, Carly was hesitant to invite Beth over to

her place. However, several others told Carly that Beth was actually
very honest and that Sarah had a grudge against her, so she was
spreading rumours about Beth.

Actually, it was Sarah who had the poor social character traits of
being dishonest and harmful to others.

If others see you being dishonest or harmful to others, they will

judge your character traits negatively. However, if you seem kind and
straightforward, they will judge you in a positive sense. Typically,
people expect positive type of behaviour.

FITTING IN THE GROUP

Cultural, religious, and family groups typically have a set of rules or
laws its members are expected to follow. Usually, there is an overlap,
where some groups have similar rules of behavior. Often these rules
also concern personal and social behavior. If you are a member of
some group, it is assumed that you follow the rules. If members see
you breaking the rules or code of the group, they will consider you as
having poor adherence character and may even punish you or force
you out of the group.

Jackson's family had been dedicated Democrats for years and had
always voted the Party ticket. However, Jackson felt that the political
views did not fit his philosophy, and he switched over to support the
Republican Party.

Jackson's father was outraged, as was his uncle. They did not want to
have anything to do with this "traitor" in their family.

Members of a group will judge others in their group according to

how they observe the rules. The law-abider is considered a good
person, while the person who breaks some rules is thought of as
having poor character, being a bad person, or being a sinner. Those
outside the group are not considered to have as high of character as
those inside the group. For example, a Muslim might accept that a
Christian was an honest person, but he would still consider him as an
infidel and of low character with respect to his religion. If you
belonged to a tightly-knit cultural group and you adhered to their
rules and traditions, others in the group would judge you as a person
of high character.
EXAMPLES OF GOOD CHARACTER
How can you tell if someone has good character? Character is the
pattern of thoughts, acts, and feelings someone shows over time.
Someone with good character believes they should make good
choices and shows over time that they almost always make choices
that are honest, respectful, fair, caring, and responsible. Making a
mistake doesn’t mean you don’t have good character. Everyone
makes mistakes and learns from them. But, when someone of good
character makes a mistake, they take responsibility for it. They also
show perseverance, which means they will make good choices and
they’ll do the right thing, even when it’s hard.

IMPORTANCE OF GOOD CHARACTER

A good character is a blessing. The man created the character.
Character is more valuable than diamonds. Nothing is lost when
wealth is lost. Much is lost when one’s health is gone, but everything
is lost when one’s character is gone. If you want to succeed in life,
you must develop and keep a spotless reputation. A person with a
decent character does no harm to other.

Character constantly demonstrates leadership and value. Having a

good character entails possessing qualities such as honesty,
responsibility, and courage. It is critical in your life to always be
honourable and honest in your profession and in your interactions
with others. We are the creators of our own personalities.

It is one of the most critical aspects of our long-term success. “It is a

magnificent and glorious reality that every man is the author of his
own character,” an american writer observed eloquently. On the
other hand, a nobel character is not created in a flash or with little
work. Consistent and well-directed effort results in a noble character.
We are the creators of our personalities. Our mental abilities are
developed. Plant the seeds and care for them properly, and they will
grow into noble character.

The germ is not a tree, the acron is not an oak, and the mind is not a
personality. God creates the mind, but man creates the character.
The mind is a garden, and a character is a fruit; the mind is a white
paper, and the character is the writing we write on it; the mind is a
metallic plate, and the character is the engraving we make on it. If
the mind is the store, then the character represents our earrings
from the transaction.

Many tiny acts and efforts result in enormous revenues derived from
rapid sales and modest percentages, yet with such huge characters.
A good character will assist you in accomplishing difficult goals and
responsibilities. Other will trust and admire you if you have a positive
social character. It takes precedence above riches, health, and
pleasure.

A good character is more valuable than rubies, wealth, crowns, or

kingdoms, and cultivating it is the most honourable task on Earth.

Students often get confused by the difference between “having good

character” and “being a good person.” There is definitely some
overlap between these (many good people also have good
character), but in the end, they are two distinct things. It all comes
down to a person’s core values and to their motivations for acting as
they do. In general, people who are considered to have good
character often have traits like integrity, honesty, courage, loyalty,
fortitude, and other important virtues that promote good behavior.
These character traits define who they are as people—and highly
influence the choices they make in their lives. Furthermore, a person
with good character does the right thing because they believe it is
the right thing to do. They don’t act because someone else is
influencing or pressuring them to do so, and they don’t do something
just because they want to look good in front of others. They take the
right action because it is important to them to live life according to
their personal values.

On the other hand, some people simply take positive actions because
of other influences. For instance, someone may donate money to a
charitable organization when they are solicited in front of other
people—but they may not have donated had they been out alone at
the time.

While the action of donating in this case is objectively good (and the
person who donated is very likely “a good person”), this action isn’t
necessarily a marker of good character. It is also not a marker of
poor character by any means—but the distinction of how you act in
front of others versus how you act when you are alone is the key. At
its core, character is something that intrinsically occurs within a
person and surpasses other factors like race, religion, age, gender,
education, and even personality in determining how we respond
when faced with tough situations in life. Other factors and our lived
experiences may influence the character traits we have—but it is
ultimately our character itself that truly dictates how we act.

INTRODUCTION TO THE LOST SPRING SUMMARY

The story, “Lost Spring” deals with the deplorable condition of poor
children who get forced to miss the simple joyful moments of
childhood because of their socio-economic conditions. These
children are not given the opportunity of schooling and are
compelled to start working early in life. The author Anees Jung
strives hard to eliminate child labour through her book. She
propagates the education of children and enforcement of strict laws
against child labour by the government. The message is to put an
end to child exploitation and let all children enjoy their days of the
spring and joy.

As we all know, spring is the season associated with optimism and

hope. It also works as a metaphor for the childhood stage of our life.
Right from the time we’re born until late childhood, every child
hopes for new beginnings and a bright future. The phase of
childhood is all about innocence, energy, and tremendous inclination
towards outdoors activities along with fun and play. And playtime
does not have any limits. It is also a time of getting more skill and
knowledge and going to school. Here, we take a look at a particularly
impressive rendition – here is the lost spring summary. The ‘Lost
Spring’ written by Anees Jung talks about the national shame of
children being forced to live a life of poverty and exploitation. The
main two protagonists of the chapter, Saheb-e-Alam and Mukesh
don’t live their childhood as they have to carry the burden of poverty
and illiteracy. In their miserable stories of exploitation, the author
provides glimpses of fortitude and resilience.

SUMMARY

The Lost Spring summary describes the terrible condition of poor

children. These children are those who didn’t get to enjoy childhood
because of the prevailing socio-economic condition in this world.
This is something that one can see all over the world. These children
don’t have the opportunity for schooling. Moreover, there is a lot of
pressure on these children to enter into labour early in life. These
unfortunate children are forced into labour. This certainly denies
them education as well as the opportunity to have enjoyment. The
author Anees Jung raises voice to eliminate child labour. Jung does
so by raising awareness regarding child education and strict law
enforcement against child labour. The call is to put an end to the
exploitation of children. This way the children will be able to enjoy
the days of the spring and have fun.

The first part tells the author’s impressions regarding the life of poor
rag pickers. The rag pickers have come from Dhaka. Furthermore, the
settlement of the rag pickers is in the area of Seemapuri. Destruction
has come in their fields and homes due to the storms. They had
come to the big city in the hope of finding living there. However, the
reality was, in fact, painful for them and they had to face many
hardships. They are certainly poor and lack various resources.

The writer watches Saheb every morning as he scrounges for “gold”

in the neighbourhood. The means of survival for these rag pickers is
the garbage. Furthermore, for the children, it is a wondrous thing.
The children are able to find a coin or two from it. These people have
ambitions and desires. The problem is that they do not know the way
to make them possible. There are quite a few things that they are
unable to reach. Later Saheb joins a tea stall where there is a
possibility for him to earn 800 Rupees and all the meals. However,
this job has deprived him of his freedom. As such their condition is
pretty hopeless and full of misery.

The second part explores the life of Mukesh. Mukesh is a boy who
belongs to the family of Bangle-makers. Firozabad is famous for its
amazing glass-blowing industry. There is an engagement of nearly
20,000 children in this particular business. Furthermore, no one over
there understands or respects the law that forbids child labour.
Moreover, the living condition, as well as the working environment,
are both horrendous.
These children live in dreary cells. Also, they work close to hot
furnaces. This is certainly very dangerous as it makes these children
blind when they enter adulthood. Furthermore, these children have
to deal with the pressure of debt. Moreover, they are unable to think
of a solution to solve this problem. There is no way for these children
to come out of this trap.

The policemen, bureaucrats, middlemen, and politicians will all

hinder their way of progress. The women in the household consider
it to be their destiny or fate. As a result of such thinking, they just
follow the established tradition. There is something different about
Mukesh. He is not like the rest of the folk there. This is because
Mukesh has big dreams. He has a desire to become a motor
mechanic in future. The garage is far away from where he lives but
he has the determination to walk.

CHARACTER OF MUKESH
Mukesh is a young boy who belongs to a bangles maker family from
Frizabad the city which is famous for its colourful bangles where
almost every colour of bangles are made sunny, gold, blue, red,
paddy green, yellow, sky blue, violet and many others. He lives in
Firozabad with his elder brother, sister-in-laws and his father.
Firozabad is famous for bangles Industries where almost 20 thousand
children illegally work with adults in dingy cell at high temperature
around the furnace without air and light. Mukesh's family is among
them whose entire family work in bangles industry and have spent
generation working around forge. But Mukesh doesn't want to work
in the bangles industry. He has a dream to be a motor-mechanic and
he insists to be that. though it seems not too easy to be but he does.
He takes the author to his half built home through a narrow stinking
lane chocked with garbage and 24 hours running water. There is no
facility of proper drainage and dirty water management. The author
sees the door of the house is made of tin with poor stability.

She beholds having entered the house a frail young lady in a dim
dark room cooking evening meal who is Muesh's sister-in-laws. Some
chopped vegetables are kept in aluminum plate on ground, thatched
grass is kept in a nook, spinach leaves are sizzling on the stove. The
situation of house seems co-exiting animals and human together. But
yet Mukesh is ready to walk a long distance to be a motor-mechanic
for making his dream true.

Mukesh learns the lesson of character is the key of life. He was an

honest boy there. He knew his situation still he did not try to go on
wrong path.

This shows how mukesh’ character was the key of his life.

Like this everyone has their own character. It’s upon on them how
they want to be. If someone has good character it means it’s the key
of success. A good person can never be the wrong things. Similarly if
someone has bad character (Bad character in the sense if someone
doesn’t respect of other, doesn’t give love to younger, thinks
negative, have wrong perspective to all the things etc.) then that
person can never get the love and respect and can never succeed.

So if life gives you a chance to be live then is a good human being. So

that your character can be the key of successful life.

As we all know, spring is the season associated with optimism and

hope. It also works as a metaphor for the childhood stage of our life.
