HF and Your Ejection

Fraction Explained

How much blood is pumped out?

The ejection fraction compares the
amount of blood in the heart NORMAL Ejection Fraction
≈50–70% is pumped out during
to the each contraction (Usually
amount of blood pumped out. comfortable during activity.)
The fraction or percentage helps
describe how well the heart is BORDERLINE Ejection Fraction
pumping blood to the body. 80% ≈41–49% is pumped out
during each contraction
(Symptoms may become
noticeable d
 uring activity.)
EJECTION 60%
FRACTION REDUCED Ejection Fraction
= 40%
≤40% is pumped out d uring
each contraction ( Symptoms
amount of blood may become noticeable
pumped out even during rest.)
20%

amount of blood
in chamber
It is also possible to have a diagnosis of heart failure with a seemingly
normal (or preserved) ejection fraction of greater than or equal to 50%.

With the proper care and treatment, many patients are able
to improve their ejection fraction and live a longer and healthier
life. Talk with your health care provider about your options.
