Task 3.1.

A) Use the Appendix 3.1 to evaluate the same book from where you took

the unit to do task 2.1. Attach a copy or a photo of it (It should be clear)

B) Then answer the questionnaire below about « Motivation and the learner »
about the same book.

1. Does the material have variety and pace?

2. Is the subject matter of reading texts, listening passages, etc. likely to be

of genuine interest to the learners, taking into account their age, social
background and cultural background, their learning objectives and the
composition of the class?

Yes, I think this book will be of great interest for teenagers and adults (which is
the audience it is intended for), no matter their culture. This book includes
videos, reading passages and audios of different topics such as stress, media
influences, secrets and lies, money, among others, that will increase students’
knowledge about the topic and, most importantly, will teach them English since
they introduce them to new vocabulary and grammar. Since this book is
intended for students that want to reach a high-intermediate level, all previously
mentioned is useful because high-intermediate level students must be able to
hold a conversation with an English speaker and understand a high percentage
of what he or she says.

3. Does the material have an attractive appearance (visuals, layout,

typography, etc.) ?

Yes. For example, it has big and colorful pictures everywhere that really draw your
attention. The layout is also aesthetically pleasing as it has a font that is easy to
read, good spacing, etc. It also has generous margins that provide us with a good
amount of space to hold the book without covering the text, which is perfect. And,
finally, its typography achieves its principal object: effective communication. How?
Well, the space between characters and blocks of text is perfectly adjusted; letters
have the right size, width, slope (e.g. italic) and weight (e.g. bold) according to the
student's needs, making the book readable and appealing.
4. Do the activities in the material encourage the personal involvement of the
learners in the learning process (e.g. by talking about themselves or
finding out about each other)?

Yes, there are lots of activities that allow students to talk about themselves freely
and get to know their classmates better.

5. If material is culture-specific, will this be acceptable to the learners?

This book is a multicultural book. Students will learn interesting things from
people that come from different countries such as Sierra Leone, Uganda,
Sweden, etc. All these people have different cultures, backgrounds,
experiences, etc. Therefore, students will not only improve their listening skills
(as they will listen to different accents) but also, they’ll build respect for people
from different cultures and develop a positive attitude to communicate and
interact with them.

6. Is there a competitive or problem solving element in the learning activities ?

There aren’t any competitive elements in the learning activities. However, there are
many exercises that require students to communicate with their classmates by
discussing and sharing their opinions so as to solve a problem or evaluate a
situation.
