Semester 1 Session 2022/2023
GROUP PROJECT (20%)

PROJECT TITLE: APPLICATION OF MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN A BUILDING

Course Learning Outcomes:

CLO 1 Discover the application of mechanical and electrical systems in a building. (LOD 1-PLO1-C3)

CLO 2 Reproduce schematic diagram of mechanical and electrical system in a building using appropriate
drawing tools. (LOD5-PLO5-P3)

CLO 3 Display the quality of individual and teamwork in completing the assigned task. (LOD7-PLO9-A5)

Introduction:
The purpose of this project is to provide an exposure to the student on the application of mechanical ventilation
(including air-conditioning ) and electrical distribution system in a simple residential building.

By working in a group, students are required to identify and select the suitable mechanical ventilation and electrical
system to be applied in a typical residential house.

At the end of the project, students should able to compile all information of the selected M&E components and system
(mechanical ventilation and electrical) in a brief schematic drawing.

PROJECT INSTRUCTION:
1. Preparation
 Propose ONE (1) design of two-storey residential house as a case study building.
o Develop the layout plan of the house (with area labelling and dimension) by using AutoCAD software.

2. Part one: Selection of mechanical ventilation system

 You are required to propose a suitable mechanical ventilation system for air circulation in all bathrooms,
kitchen and ONE (1) living space for the case study house.
 The following table shows the ventilation rate requirement for the spaces:

Location Required Air-change rate

(ACH)
Bathroom/toilet Minimum 10 ACH
Kitchen Minimum 20 ACH
*Living space Minimum 8 ACH
*Living space= family hall/ living hall
 Select suitable product in the market that can comply the minimum ventilation requirement.

1
 Show all calculation, detailed product specifications (highlight the ventilation rate, price, brand, features
etc.) and justify your selection.

3. Part two: Selection of the air-conditioning system

 You are required to determine the appropriate capacity of the split-unit air-conditioning system for at least
TWO (2) rooms and ONE (1) Living hall or family area.
 Select suitable product in the market that can comply the minimum air-conditioning capacity.
 Show all calculation, detailed product specifications (highlight the cooling HP, price, brand, features, etc.)
and justify your selection.

4. Part three : Electrical distribution system

 You are required to develop an electrical distribution diagram for the case study house that includes all
lightings, fans, switches, socket outlets and the selected mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning system.
i To complete this task, you are recommended to consult and electrician, extended reading of literatures
and electrical distribution guidelines.
ii The diagram should include all necessary symbols and legends and be drawn according to standards
and guidelines.
