What is GOOD?

1. What is the value of life?

- As a set of experiences that are good, is what has value, and our capacity to have them is the intrinsic
value of life.

2. If you are a member of this fraternity, what will you do?

- I wouldn’t join such a fraternity that supports violence in the first place, however, if by chance I was
imprudent and I became a member of this fraternity, subsequent to Cris’ death I will step up and say the
truth to the authorities. Knowing that someone died and suffered unimaginable pain because of the
hazing act that was executed by the members of the fraternity that I take part in will give me sleepless
nights and an unending feeling of guilt. Cris’ face will surely haunt me in my dreams. I can’t live with
carrying such heavy guilt every day. I won’t stay silent especially if I know something about how and why
the victim died. It’s the least thing I could do for his family and Cris himself, help him get the justice he
deserves even if it means I’m going behind bars as well for being a member of the said fraternity.
However, if I know that I didn’t do anything wrong and was just a mere witness to the crime I would ask
for protection first before cooperating to protect my identity and the people who are close to me.
There’s a chance that the reason why people aren’t speaking up is that they want to protect themselves
and their families from harm that the suspects can do to them if they let the cat out of the bag. It is
complicated and dangerous at the same time but justice should be served and the right thing should be
done.

3. Based from the given story, what is the concept of morality that this fraternity advocates?

- This fraternity believes that extreme violence or hazing is acceptable because it is the initiation into the
brotherhood. In an article written by the ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group, there is 31 victims
of hazing within the time frame of 1954-2017 in the Philippines. Cris Mendez is the 15 th person who died
due to hazing nationwide, 6th as a student from the University of the Philippines, and the 1st hazing
death victim of Sigma Rho fraternity. The reason why the leaders denounced the death of Cris and why
the members kept their mouths shut is still unknown to this day. However, in 2019 there was an exposé
proving that the fraternity promotes brutality and immorality. Had incident where a Sigma Rho member
committed suicide after discovering the alleged conversations to fraternity members, including images
of hazing rituals, paraphernalia, hazing victim, and hateful content is published online. If this is how the
fraternities show their brotherhood then many people would agree that what they are doing is bad and
unethical.
