Students may find it instructive to examine images of the real Eva
Perón and compare them to the movie portrayal of her. There are a wealth of images of Eva Perón available online, as her activities as a public figure were thoroughly documented during her own lifetime.
Many of these images
echo moments in the film, such as this photograph showing the huge scale of her 1952 funeral, which was attended by more than 3 million people.
Others, such as this
photograph of Eva rallying the crowds from the balcony of the Casa Rosada during her last public appearance, shed additional light on events depicted in the film. You will note that in this historical photograph, Eva is being helped by her husband. At this point her cancer was so advanced that she was unable to stand without assistance. 4 Here we can see how closely the movie matched the actual event of Juan Perón’s 1951 campaign rally. Note the central placement of the name Eva, not Juan, as much of his popularity was based on his wife’s appeal to ordinary Argentines.
This movie still from 1945’s La
Cabalgata del Circo shows Eva Duarte in one of her film roles, starring with Libertad Lamarque.
Here we can see Eva wearing a
Christian Dior ball gown at the Teatro Colón in 1949, echoing the depiction in the film during the song “Rainbow High,” in which Eva says to “Christian Dior” her. 5
