Kritiking

mabuhay at mag buwis buhay … at nagkikita silang nakaligtas.

A. 1.What is GMO -
A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal,
microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified
in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This
creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not
occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

2. A. What is the role of GM O's in food and agricultural industry?

Most existing genetically modified crops have been developed to improve

yield through the introduction of resistance to plant diseases or of increased tolerance of
herbicides. GM foods can also allow for reductions in food prices through improved yields
and reliability.

B. In non food crops and micro organism ?

GM plants developed for non-food or non-feed purposes are plants which

may be used for a wide range of applications such as the production of:
industrial enzymes; raw materials for bio-fuels, paper and starch; medicinal
products (such as vaccines and antibodies); as well as other uses which can
range from energy

3. The benefits of GMo’s ?

More nutritious food

Tastier food

Disease- and drought-resistant plants that require fewer environmental resources

(such as water and fertilizer)

Less use of pesticides

Increased supply of food with reduced cost and longer shelf life

Faster growing plants and animals

Food with more desirable traits, such as potatoes that produce less of a cancer-
causing substance when fried

Medicinal foods that could be used as vaccines or other medicines

4. The potential risk of GMO’S in the:

 A. Environment - Although the global debate on GMOs has usually allied
disparate groups concerned about food safety and the environment,
environmental risks are perceived to differ from food safety risks in
several ways. Experience built up through decades of environmental
impact studies suggests that the impact of new biological elements in
ecosystems may take years or decades to be understood. unintended
effects on the dynamics of populations in the receiving environment as a
result of impacts on non-target species, which may occur directly by
predation or competition, or indirectly by changes in land use or farming
practices;
 unintended effects on bio-geochemistry, especially through impacts on soil
microbial populations that regulate the flow of nitrogen, phosphorus and
other essential elements;
 the transfer of inserted genetic material to other domesticated or native
populations, generally known as gene flow, through pollination, mixed
mating's, dispersal or microbial transfer.

Because these potentially adverse effects have been documented in the field with
non-GMO species, and because the consequences of these effects could be
serious, it is important to regulate and monitor all introductions of GMOs
effectively. Field experiments in ecology take months or years to become valid.
Furthermore, current data on GMOs in the field should be viewed as location-
specific, and extrapolations from laboratory or computer simulation to the field
must be made cautiously.

B.To health -GMO plants might have a different balance of toxins, increasing
the risk of harm to humans. Specific health concerns include an increased risk
of cancer and infertility, although research on the particular risks of GMO plant
toxins is very limited.

C. To society - The major risk from the production of the transgene will lie
in the use of novel proteins or other molecules produced by the transgenic
organisms. Either in the native form or, following modifications in the human
body, such molecules could be inimical to human health

5. What is genetic engineering ?

Genetic engineering is a study for mixing the genes of animals. It

can be useful in agricultural matters too. It's like combining a two things to form
one extraordinary things.
Genetic engineering is the process of using recombinant DNA
(rDNA) technology to alter the genetic makeup of an organism. Traditionally,
humans have manipulated genomes indirectly by controlling breeding and
selecting offspring with desired traits.

What is nano technology ?

Nanotechnology is a field of research and innovation concerned with

building 'things' - generally, materials and devices - on the scale of atoms and
molecules. A nanometre is one-billionth of a metre: ten times the diameter of
a hydrogen atom…
Nanotechnology (or "nanotech") is manipulation of matter on an atomic,
molecular, and supramolecular scale. ... Nanotechnology may be able to create many
new materials and devices with a vast range of applications, such as in nanomedicine,
nanoelectronics, biomaterials energy production, and consumer products.

How small is nano scale?

The nanoscale is the dimensional range of approximately 1 to 100

nanometres. But what does this really mean? To begin, take a look at the
back of your hand. Using just your eyes you can focus down to a scale of 1
centimetre to 1 millimetre.

What are nano materials ?

Chemical compounds or materials that are produced and used on a

very small scale are known as nanomaterials. In contrast to the same material
without nanoscale features, nanomaterials are developed to exhibit novel
properties like increased strength, chemical reactivity, or conductivity.

What is nano manufacturing ?

Nanotechnology allows for the production of extremely small electronics

and electric devices, such as carbon nanotube-based nanoscale transistors.
Printing thin and incredibly flexible objects, such as flexible gas sensors,
electric textiles, and plastic solar panels, is possible due to the extremely
small scale.

The importance and concerns of using nano technology ?

Improved manufacturing processes, water purification systems, energy

systems, physical enhancement, nanomedicine, better food production
methods, nutrition, and large-scale infrastructure auto-fabrication are a few of
the major advantages of nanotechnology
B.2. About the Golden Rice made by those people or made by scientist

A. Golden Rice of the international rice research institute.

Provitamin A Biofortified Rice Event GR2E (Golden Rice)

In 2017, Health Canada received a submission to allow the sale of a

variety of rice, called Provitamin A Biofortified Rice Event GR2E (Golden
Rice).  This genetically modified rice variety has higher levels of provitamin A
and is intended to be sold in countries where diets are typically low in vitamin
A.  GR2E rice will be grown commercially in major rice-producing regions,
primarily in Asia.  The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has
indicated that this product is not intended to be sold in Canada at this time.
In order to determine whether this rice variety could be sold in Canada as
food, the scientists at Health Canada conducted a scientific assessment that
ensured that GR2E rice is safe for consumption, that the increased provitamin
A levels posed no risk to Canadian consumers, and that it still had all its
nutritional value.  Our scientists also needed to assess how GR2E was
developed and whether it can be toxic or cause allergic reactions.  The ability
of the GR2E rice in helping vitamin A deficiency in affected populations was
not evaluated.
Scientists with expertise in molecular biology, microbiology, toxicology,
chemistry and nutrition conducted a thorough analysis of the data and the
protocols provided by the applicant to ensure the validity of the results.
Following this assessment, it was determined that the changes made in this
rice variety did not pose a greater risk to human health than rice varieties
currently available on the Canadian market.  In addition, Health Canada also
concluded that GR2E would have no impact on allergies, and that there were
no differences in the nutritional value of GR2E compared to other traditional
rice varieties available for consumption except for increased levels of
provitamin A.
Health Canada's assessment of GR2E was conducted according to the
Guidelines for Safety Assessment of Novel Foods.  The approach taken by
Health Canada in the safety assessment of GM foods is based upon scientific
principles developed through expert international consultation over the last 20
years with agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food
and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the
Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The
approach taken by Canada is currently applied by regulatory agencies around
the world in countries such as the European Union, Australia/New Zealand,
Japan, and the United States.

B. Genetically modified organisms priduce by philippines researches.

23 July 2021, Los Baños, PHILIPPINES – Filipino farmers will become the
first in the world to be able to cultivate a variety of rice enriched with nutrients
to help reduce childhood malnutrition, after receiving the green light
from regulators.

Golden Rice was developed by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice

Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) in partnership with the International Rice
Research Institute (IRRI) to contain additional levels of beta-carotene, which
the body converts into vitamin A.

Around one in five children from the poorest communities in the Philippines

suffer from vitamin A deficiency (VAD), which affects an estimated 190 million
children worldwide. The condition is the most common cause of childhood
blindness, as well as a contributing factor to a weakened immune system.
“This milestone puts the Philippines at the global forefront in leveraging
agriculture research to address the issues of malnutrition and related health
impacts in a safe and sustainable way” said Dr. Jean Balié, Director General
of IRRI, a CGIAR research centre.

“The regulatory success of Golden Rice demonstrates the research

leadership of DA-PhilRice and the robustness of the Philippine biosafety
regulatory system.”

Golden Rice is genetically engineered to provide up to 50 per cent of the

estimated average requirement (EAR) for vitamin A of young children,
the age group most susceptible to VAD in the Philippines.

This new variety has already received food safety approvals from regulators in
Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States of America but the
Philippines is the first country to approve commercial cultivation. Golden Rice
is also currently undergoing final regulatory review in Bangladesh.

“We are committed to ensuring the highest quality of seed for farmers and a
safe and nutritious food supply for all Filipinos,” said Dr. John de Leon,
Executive Director of DA-PhilRice.

“A comprehensive quality assurance and stewardship program for Golden

Rice will be set in place, covering the entire value chain from seed production,
to post-harvest processing, to marketing.”

DA-PhilRice has started working with local partners to identify market- and
program-based approaches for bringing Golden Rice first to selected
communities with a high prevalence of VAD and other associated
micronutrient deficiencies.

It is also increasing the volume of available seed and other remaining

activities necessary for moving Golden Rice into farmers’ fields.

Previous interventions to tackle VAD have included providing supplements to

families to add to their meals, or biofortifying products like oil or flour, which
can be costly or require behaviour change from under-nourished households.
Golden Rice adds an important nutrient to a staple food that is already
consumed in volumes of almost 120kg per capita per year.

“The last-mile delivery of Golden Rice is just one component of a food

systems approach to nutrition, which also includes community outreach and
extension services, and improved market access for farmers,” said Dr. Ajay
Kohli, IRRI Director for Research.

“By improving rice varieties that address farmer, consumer, and environment
needs, precision breeding innovations such as genetic engineering and gene
editing can open up pathways for more inclusive participation in the food
system.”
Golden Rice was first conceived by Professors Ingo Potrykus and Peter Beyer
in the late 1980s. IRRI became the first licensee of the scientists’ work in
2001.

The Healthier Rice Program at IRRI is currently developing high iron and zinc
rice (HIZR), with the end goal of releasing a stacked variety containing beta-
carotene, iron and zinc that can help address multiple micronutrient
deficiencies affecting over two billion people worldwide.

C. Isues on philippines biosafety policies on GMO

Genetically Modified Crops in the Philippines: Can Existing Biosafety

Regulations Adequately Protect the Environment?

Christina L. Richmond
Global concern persists about the use of genetically modified crops (“GM
crops”). This concern originates from the divergent perspectives of nations
with a stake in either the production or consumption of GM crops. Proponents
of GM crops in developing countries claim that the crops could increase food
supply by improving plant resistance to pesticides, thereby alleviating the
need for farmers to purchase chemicals that are frequently expensive or
unavailable. However, many organizations and countries are hesitant or
outright opposed to GM crops, particularly regarding their potentially
undesirable ecological and agricultural consequences. As one of the first
Asian nations to approve and commercialize a GM crop, the Philippines
serves as a useful case study for evaluating a developing nation’s strategy for
regulating the environmental impacts of agricultural biotechnology in the face
of international pressures. Though among the first of the Asian nations to
enact biosafety regulations, the Philippines’ existing regulations do not
adequately protect the environment because they lack enforcement power
and leave gaps in coverage. Legislation that would create a more streamlined
regulatory process and endow the regulating agencies with stronger
enforcement authority should be enacted.

C.2. Creative work

A.Nano product
- Write the raw materials that make up your product

Plastic nylon beryllium bita-titanium

Metal monel titanium cellulose acetate propionate,

- The procedure how do you did it and then the specific use of the final
product.
Sunglasses are made beginning with the frames, the piece that hold the
lenses. First, the size and shape of the desired frames is made using a
computer before production can begin. After a design is created, the
frames are made following these six steps:
. Step 1: Create Steel Mold
. Step 2: Sheets of Plastic
. Step 3: Punch Blank Frames
. Step 4: Remove Excess Plastic
. Step 5: Carve Groove for Lens
. Step 6: Smooth Edges

B.Provide description of recent innovations

Eye specialists advise that if you expose our eyes to bright sunlight too
long, you are at risk of developing sun-related eye diseases. Cataracts,
pterygium, glaucoma, and macular degeneration can start inflicting damage in
your eyes if you don't wear the right sunglasses.
