KKBIswAS ibiswas@himadri.com ‘The Rickshaw Puller’ Pig ‘The tinkling ofa brass Bellis sound famillarto all of us Kolkatans, It is a sound of a hand pulled rickshaw. Itis also a sound that will soon be gone {rom the land of ts origin. Hand pulled rickshaws and trams are considered to be Kolkata's most unique features. To some they symbolize living in the past but to some again, itis a part of our cultural hertage. Hand-pulledrickshaws are also considered to be a prime example of cheap labour and ‘exploitation of the poor. However, now Government seems to hhave taken a stand on this matter. It has decided to draw the curtains on hand-pulled rickshaws altogether. Well, has this decision been rightly taken? According to police record, there are 2851 registered pullers while the rickshaw unions claim that there are actually 26,000 ‘unregistered rickshaw pullers. How does the Government think it ‘can employ this number of people in such a short span of time \whilst they are deprived of their only source of income? To get a ‘peek into the present situation, letus enter thelfe of Rafiz Ahmed, Rafizhas been pulling cariage number 78 forthe better part ofhis 5 years. However, he does not own his very own rickshaw, that he hhas been puling’his entire life. He has four children and two {grandchildren, all of whom are dependent on his sole income of RR, 60 to Rs, 150 per day. His grandchildren have been enrolled with outmost dificuity in the local Government school. Their fees hhave notbeen paid forthe last 5 months and the school authorities have been threatening to terminate their slay once and for al Rafiz cannot bear the pain that none of his ctildren would be ‘educated: a sory state indeed. Rafiz, however, is determined to ‘make his grandchildren Ali and Angura pass their Secondary Board Exam atthe veryleast.Inthis he wilt leastbe able to vea somewhat a peaceful retired life. However, the prospect seems far away as suddenly this news reaches his weary ears that all hhand-puled rickshaws are going to be taken away, fnot banned. Where will ho go? How wil he employ himself with a new job this late at ite? How will he provide the children who ask for nothing else but their school fees so that they can continue their studies/ What did they do to deserve sucha fate? The story is unfinished as we do not know how the Government plans an alternative way to employ 26,000 rickshaw pullers within the given period of time, The Government labels pulling the rickshaw as an ‘inhuman practice’ but have the bread earners complained about it? This is a source of earning for those thousands residing in the city. Is not eradicating this tanta- ‘mounting to a‘inhuman practice’ on the part ofthe Government as well Even today, as | write this now, lam sure that many are unaware of the situation that many people who form a part of our society are facing such a teribe situation today.
