Strategies in Teaching Mathematics in The Primary Grades

I.OBJECTIVES
Knowledge: Identify whether numbers are
“less than” or “greater than” or
“equal to” to one another and also
understand the difference between
“>”, “<” and “=” sign.
Skills: Compares two sets using the
expression “less than”, “greater
than”, and “equal to” and order
sets from least to greatest or vice
versa.
Attitude: Finds excitement and active
participation in doing classroom
activities.
II.PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing or presenting the 1.Drill
new lesson Using strategies to determine if
one group is greater than, less than
or equal to in the range up to 10.
(using pictures, symbols, objects
and/or numerals.
2.Motivation
How old are you?
How old is your seatmate?
The student will have vary
answer.
Is she or he older than you,
younger than you or the same
age?
How did you know that?
The student will have vary
answer.
B. Establishing a purpose for the Show a two set of candies.
lesson On the right hand there are three
candies and on the left hand there
are six.
Which side have less than number
of candies?

C. Presenting examples of the new Show a picture of different

lesson animals/insects with the correct
greater than, less than and equal to
signs.
Blue fishes are greater than green
fishes.
Bee is less than bugs.
Red birds is equal to blue birds.

D. Discussing new concepts and Identify each sets having sign

practicing new skills #1 whether it’s TRUE or FALSE.

E. Discussing new concepts and Compare the numbers. Write the

practicing new skills #2 correct symbol. Less than <,
Greater than >, or equal = to.
F. Developing Mastery In the form of game, call two
representative of each group. The
teacher will give a set of objects
and they will identify what is the
right sign to be used. Find out
who answers fast.
G. Finding practical applications Count every person who sits in the
of concepts and skills in daily first and last row. Identify what
living row has the greater number of
person.
H. Making Generalizations and To compare bigger numbers we
abstractions about the lesson use greater than “>”sign, in
smallest numbers we use less than
“<” sign and equal to“=” to equal
number of things.
