CHEMISTRY CRITERION D TASK 6

Q1. The best way to reduce the impact of acid rain is to prevent the emission of sulfur dioxide and
oxides of nitrogen. There are a number of methods that are used in the industry to accomplish this,
which include scrubbing, hydro desulphurisation and catalytic converters which you will focus on
this task.

Use the information in the video and add your own research to write a report on the efficacy of one
of these methods. Explain the science behind it, discuss and evaluate the impact. Comment on the
role that political factors play in the adaptation of such technologies globally.

i. Describe the changes in ozone concentration at the South Pole between 1980 and 2006
using the images given below:

ii. Describe what figure given below shows about the types of UV radiation and the effect
of the ozone layer on them.
iii. In the 1970s, scientists discovered that ozone was being rapidly broken down by
substances called CFCs. Find out what CFCs are, what they were used for and explain
the science behind their effect on ozone.

iv. Outline how scientists measure ozone concentration by carrying out an Internet search.
