Origin of media in Pakistan:

The media in Pakistan dates back to pre-partition years of British India, The conservative
newspaper, Nawa-i-Waqt, established in 1940.

The newspaper Dawn, founded by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and first published in 1941, was
dedicated to promoting for an independent Pakistan. In a sense, Pakistani print media came
into existence with a mission to promulgate the idea of Pakistan.

Launched on 14 August 1947, Radio Pakistan started with the national Mission of raising
awareness among the masses. Till date, Radio Pakistan continues with its Objective to serve as
a credible and effective medium to promote Pakistan as an enlightened and progressive Islamic
country both at home and abroad.

Conceived as early as 1956 and formally launched in 1964, Pakistan Television (PTV), the
state-owned TV channel has been serving the nation for over five .

 General Ayub khan:

When Pakistan was in the grip of its first military government (1958-69) headed by General Ayub
Khan. Some political parties started publishing their own newspapers and magazines in the
second half of the 1960s.The first step in introducing media laws in the country was done by the
then military ruler and President Ayub Khan who promulgated the Press and Publication
Ordinance (PPO) in 1962.

 Zia-ul-Haq:

When the third military government (1977-88) replaced Bhutto, it immediately imposed media
censorship. Over-lorded by a self-professed Islamist general, Ziaul Haq, the state intended to
control private news media, radio and state-owned newspapers – in order to effectively
depoliticize and Islamize the society.More draconian additions were made to the PPO during the
reign of General Zia-Ul-Haq in the 1980s.

 Pervaiz musharraf:

Most of the private media in Pakistan flourished under the Musharraf regime.Pervez Musharraf,
imposed no restrictions on the media, and within three years of coming to power, he allowed
private news channels to become operational in the country.Pakistani media was free like never
before.
 First wave of liberalization:

It was with the return of democracy in 1988 that the first wave of media liberalisation started.
Pakistanis who could afford to have satellite dish antennas could access many international
television channels including BBC and CNN. The state-owned (PTV) also started to allow the
airing of programs produced by private production . Pakistan’s first privately-owned FM radio
station, too, was set up during this era.

 Second wave of liberalization:

The second wave of the liberalization of started in 1999 – under the era of General Pervez
Musharraf – and continues till today, though, of course, with a lot of hiccups. It has led to the
