1. Swaraj means that we must live within ourselves, we must be self-


contained, we must be self-aware. -C.R. Das

2. Chittaranjan Das often refused to take remuneration for cases including


the famous Dacca Conspiracy case and Alipore Bombing case. He was
known as Deshbandhu which means "Friend of the nation".

3. Das was a Barrister who became a public figure in 1909 when he


successfully defended Aurobindo Ghosh on charges of involvement in
the Alipore conspiracy case.

4. Das with Bipin Chandra Pal and Aurobindo Ghosh published 'the ‘Bande
Mataram’ English weekly for propagating the ideals of swaraj.

5. He initiated a ban on British clothes in Bengal during the Non-


Cooperation Movement of 1919 to 1922.

6. Das was arrested in the year 1921 with his wife and son and was
sentenced to six months' imprisonment.

7. He was elected as the president of the Ahmedabad Congress in the


year 1921 and became the first elected mayor of Calcutta Municipal
Corporation in 1924.

8. Das also brought out a newspaper called 'Forward' and later changed
its name to Liberty to fight the British Raj. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose
was the editor of this newspaper.

9. Chittaranjan founded the Swaraj Party that sought greater self-


government and political freedom for the Indian people from the British
Raj.
10. Das donated his house and lands which at present is transformed into a
hospital called Chittaranjan Seva Sadan and has gone from being a
women's hospital to a multi-speciality.
