Written Assignment #4 - Home Lighting Plan

STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS

Assignment

The student is required to provide a lighting solution for the attached, one bedroom condominium
unit. The enclosed drawings are drawn to the scale of ¼” = 1’-0”.

Your client is a creative, urban couple, in their mid 30s. The program requirements include:

1. Provide a living area to accommodate six (6) people.

2. Provide a dining area to accommodate six (6) people.
3. Provide a TV area in the living area, or bedroom (or both; your design decision).
4. Bedroom area to accommodate a queen-sized bed for the couple.
5. The ceiling height is 9’-0”.

The kitchen and bathroom layout must remain as indicated on the attached floor plan.

You may wish to design a suspended drywall ceiling system, if you are planning to incorporate
downlighting or cove lighting into your lighting design solution. Please ensure to lower the ceiling
enough to accommodate the height of the recessed downlights (pot lights). If you plan to incorporate
a suspended drywall ceiling system into your design solution, please ensure to provide a 6” wide
(minimum width) drapery pocket, (to accommodate your window treatment) as the windows extend
1’-0” above the floor to ceiling, in design.

You may also consider lowering the bathroom ceiling height to 8’-0”, to accommodate the ducting for
the exhaust fans.

Submission:

Your drawing documentations may be drafted manually, or you may prepare your drawing using
computer software programs such as AutoCAD, Illustrator, Sketch Up, etc.

All drawings MUST be drawn accurately, to the scale of: ¼” = 1’-0”.

All drawings and specification booklet to be submitted electronically into Blackboard. Details as to
how to submit assignments will be posted on Blackboard.

Assignment submissions shall be submitted online and should be either a MS Word document or a
.pdf file format.

Your drawing documentations and specifications booklet shall include your name, course, assignment
number, date, and professor’s name.

All images in your specification booklet, shall be cited with the manufacturer’s name.
Your assignment submission will include the following drawing documentations:

Part 1 - Floor Plan Value: 10% of final grade

The Floor Plan (sheet ID-1 of 3) drawing shall include all the wall, door, window, kitchen and
bathroom cabinetry, plumbing fixtures and appliances, as indicated on the attached floor plan. You
must redraw the attached floor plan, to the scale of ¼” = 1’-0”.

All the furniture is to MUST be drawn to scale ( ¼” = 1’-0”) on the floor plan, based upon your client’s
“program requirements” listed above.

● The portable lighting elements and SYMBOLS shall also be drawn on the floor plan. All the
portable lighting luminaires are to be highlighted in yellow. The luminaire symbols must be
drawn on the legend, with the luminaire’s specifications. The luminaire specifications shall
include:
1. Manufacturer *
2. Model Number *
3. Size *
4. Finish *
5. Lamp Type *
6. Lamp Wattage *
Part 2 - Reflected Ceiling Plan Value: 10% of final grade

The Reflected Ceiling Plan (sheet ID-2 of 3) shall note all the hardwired luminaire locations on the
ceiling and wall areas including: all ceiling fixtures,all wall sconces, switches, exhaust fans, Smoke &
CO Alarms/Detectors, Smoke Alarms/Detectors, bulkheads, drapery pockets and all specialty lighting
elements (i.e., ambient cove lighting,).

A legend, complete with symbols with specifications for all fixtures selected shall also be provided

All fixture locations MUST be dimensioned.

All lighting fixture symbols to be highlighted in yellow.

All drawings submitted MUST be drawn to the scale of: ¼” = 1’-0”.

Part 3 - Power & Communications Plan Value: 5% of Final Grade

The Power & Communications Plan (sheet ID-3 of 3) shall note all the electrical receptacles, half-
switched electrical (if required), telephone and cable outlets, and thermostat locations. All electrical
receptacles, telephone and cable outlet locations MUST be dimensioned.

A legend with complete specifications (please see above *specifications from Part 1) and symbols
for all fixtures selected, shall also be provided.

All receptacle and outlet symbols are to be highlighted in yellow.

All drawings submitted MUST be drawn to the scale of: ¼” = 1’-0”.

Part 4 - Product Specifications Booklet Value: 10% of final grade

The product specification booklet shall provide all the IMAGES of all the portable and hardwired
luminaires, switches, 120 V duplex electrical receptacles, 120 V GFCI duplex electrical receptacles,
240 V electrical receptacles, telephone outlets, cable outlets, exhaust fans, Smoke & CO Detectors.

As discussed in Assignment #3, provide a complete specification for all the luminaires and fixtures
selected, noting:

1. Manufacturer
2. Model Number
3. Size
4. Finish
5. Lamp Type
6. Lamp wattage
Please ensure to provide a symbol to identify the exact luminaire and fixture locations on the drawing
documentation submission.
