Written Assignment #3 Part 1 - Floor Plan

STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS

Assignment
The student is required to provide a lighting solution for a living room, family room or a combination
living/dining room. You are required to measure the selected room accurately. From your site measure notes,
you are required to draw the room, to the scale of ¼” = 1’-0”.

Your room lighting design should aim to include five (5) types of lighting effects including: general lighting, task
lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting and combustion lighting.

Your assignment submission will include the following drawing documentation, lighting rationale and lighting
specification booklet for a total of 3 documents:

1) Floor Plan Value: 10% of final grade

Your Floor Plan (sheet ID1 of 3) drawing shall include all wall, door, window and fireplace (if required) locations,
drawn to the scale of ¼” = 1’-0”. All the furniture, drawn to scale, will be located on the floor plan drawing. The
portable lighting elements will also be drawn on the floor plan. All your portable lighting fixture symbols must
be highlighted in yellow. All the luminaire specifications are to be included on your legend adjacent to the
lighting symbol. Do NOT provide picture on your drawing legend, as this will be submitted in a separate
document with the specifications.

2) Lighting Rationale

In a separate document, write a Rationale in bullet point, for why you choose the specific types of lamps out of
the four available and the lighting effect they provide: LED, Low-Voltage Halogen, Fluorescent, HID and
Incandescent (150 words maximum).
3) Floor Plan Specifications:

As required in Assignment #2, you must provide the complete specifications of ALL the portable luminaires.
The specifications include:

1. Manufacturer
2. Model Number
3. Size
4. Finish
5. Lamp Type
6. Lamp Wattage Requirements

NOTE: All pictures to be submitted separately with specifications in a 8 ½” x 11” format as noted below:
Submission:

Your drawing documents may be drafted manually, or you may prepare your drawings using computer
software programs such as AutoCAD, Illustrator , Sketch up, etc.

All drawings MUST be drawn accurately to the scale of ¼” = 1’-0”.

All drawings to include a legend with symbols and specifications.

All portable luminaire pictures with specifications to be submitted electronically in a separate 8 ½” x 11”
document.

Your assignment must be submitted electronically into Blackboard. You may submit it as three separate
documents within the same assignment submission area.

The report will be submitted online and should be either a MS Word document or a .pdf file format.

Your drawing documentations, rationale and specification booklet shall include: your name, course, assignment
number, date, professor’s name.

All images in your specification booklet, shall be cited.

Accent Wall Downlight

• I chose this type of picture light due to multiple bulbs and the choice of using an incandescent or halogen
bulb.
• Having two bulbs shining down on a painting shows great contrast and a dramatic spotlight.
• Using an incandescent bulb will give a warm, mellow, and natural sunlight vibe to the paintings.
• Using a halogen bulb will burn 10 percent brighter therefore it will be the best type of bulb to illuminate
the artwork.
• A total of 80 watts.

Table Luminaire

• I chose this type of table luminaire due to the wattage and the placement location in the floor plan.
• I placed this lamp on a console table which sits in the middle of two torchieres.
• This incandescent task lamp adds a closer range of light for people sitting in the accent chair or sofa.
• A total of 100 watts and 1500 lumens.

Tree Lamp

• I chose this type of floor lamp for having a huge range of light that gets emitted by five LED bulbs.
• I placed this tree lamp in the bottom right corner above a sectional sofa.
• People can now read or relax due to its dimming ability.
• A total of 20 watts and 2400 lumens.

Uplighter (Torchier Lamp)

• I chose this type of torchiere floor lamp for the two incandescent bulbs to add to the overall ambiance of
the room.
• I placed this floor lamp in the bottom left corner of the sectional sofa to create a symmetrical balance
with the four floor lamps.
• A total of 300 watts.

Uplighter (Torchiere/Reading Lamp)

• I chose this type of torchiere floor lamp for the multi-purpose of ambient and task lighting.
• I placed this floor lamp in the top left corner of the floor plan.
• This lamp puts the whole room together by adding more LED lighting that will illuminate the ceiling and
adds an extra task reading lamp.
• A total of 60 watts and 2700 lumens.
