Grade 10 Biology

Topic: Drawing Rules

Instructions: Read Carefully and Follow Step 1-5.

Step # 1

Think about the following questions:

1. Do you think you can draw your biological drawings the same way you draw

your regular drawings? Explain

2. do you thin there needs to be rules governing Biological drawings? Explain.

Step # 2

Observe the photo below and state which you think is most appropriate as a

biological drawing, please state why you have made your decision.
Step # 3

Watch the following videos

# 1- Please start at 2:33 on the video. Entitled “ Drawing for CSEC Biology

Step # 4

Please read the following notes.

The following guidelines should be used for drawing.

(a) The drawing should be placed in a position on the page which will allow for

neat and clear labelling. Drawings to the left of the page.

The page would be bordered with a ruler.

(b) If the drawing/diagram is included in the written material, it should be

placed just before this material and should be referred to in your answer.

(c) Drawings should be done in pencil. The use of coloured pencils is accepted.

(d) The drawing should be large enough so that all structures can be clearly

drawn. Covering at least 80% of the page.

(e) The drawing should be correctly proportioned and parts should be accurately

positioned.
(f) In order to get a smooth, unbroken line when drawing, lift the pencil from

the paper as infrequently as possible until the line is completely drawn. This

method will help to eliminate haphazard and sketchy lines.

(g) When a large number of small structures are present in a specimen, draw

only a few of them carefully, showing structural details.

(h) Write labels in pencil.

(i) Labels should be annotated (that is, accompanied by brief explanatory notes).

The label lines should all end at the same place and this should be a LINE not an

arrow. They should be done with a ruler. Do NOT annotate on the line. The

merely shows the connection with the item being labelled and the annotation.

NB. A Good annotation is brief and informative. It tells how the feature

looks (it’s structure) and it tells what it does (its function).

When writing the annotations, you need to choose if will use upper case

letters (capital) or lowercase (common letters). you decide you should stick

to it. Sentence case is not accepted.

 (j) Label lines should never cross each other and should be horizontal.

(k) In drawings where only, a few structures are being labelled, all labels should

be written on the right of the drawing.

(l) Drawings must have a full title and magnification. This is usually written

below the drawing and underlined. The title tells the name of the structure or

organism and the view from which the drawing was made.
Nb. All drawings must have a title. The title must be self -explanatory; it

must show exactly what the illustration is suppose to show.

A good title includes the name of the organism and the structure / view of the

organism along with the magnification.

For example-

DRAWING SHOWING THE EXTERNAL FEATURES OF A MANGO LEAF * 10.5

Titles should be in capital letters and underlined and placed below the drawing.

You drawing MUST have a title.

Magnification=

Size of drawing
______________
Size of specimen

(M). All drawings must have scale bar. For example
