Inside this issue:
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
Men of Christ Church 2
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined.”

The lack of daylight this time of year always bums me out. The other Prayer Shawl Ministry 2
night I commented to Sue, “What time is it, midnight?”… Turns out it was
only 5:30. Prayer Breakfast 2
So much about winter bothers me (the cold, the snow, the wind), but Christian Education 3
nothing more than the lack of light. I’m sure a big part of that is the Sunday School classes 3
vitamin D my body craves, as well as the deep warmth that only the sun

can seem to provide me.

I know I’m not the only one.

How about you?
From the Church Office 6
I recently read an article saying winter, with its causing us to want to pull
in and hibernate, is actually a gift for us to spend time doing some of the Moved? New Phone #? 6
work of self-care and evaluation. While that may be so, it doesn’t really Hospitalized? Surgery? 6
make those winter blahs any easier to handle. I still want the heat and
the light. Note for Church Leaders 6
In thinking about this time of year, how appropriate it is that we Newsletter Deadline 6
celebrate the birth of Immanuel. The passage from Isaiah listed above is Altar Flowers 6
seen as a promise of Immanuel whose coming would give light to those

living in darkness.
Bad Weather/Snow Policy 6
Beginning on January 1st, we will be using a worship series called “SAD:
Shining a Light on the Blahs.” It is my hope that this series will help you January’s Calendar 7
through these literal dark winter weeks, as well as any metaphorical dark
nights you are going through, by examining and practicing ways to draw
ever closer to the light of
Christ and to follow in his
ways.
I remember and give thanks
for you always in my prayers.
In Christian Love,
Pastor Brian

them to the church so they can be kept out of landfills and recycled.
Recycling containers are container is by the 2nd Street entrance to Frank Hall.

Hershey. Contact: George Finney
• Batteries: Household batteries of all kinds can be recycled – even hearing aid batteries. They will be taken for
recycling. Contact: Bob Small

Susannah’s Pantry
People come to CUMC seeking immediate food help. We do not want to turn anyone away and we especially
want to meet them as Christ’s hands extended. We hand out groceries to community members in need that
come to the church. This is a faith-ministry ... as we give the food away to needy families, we trust God to supply
yet more! You can help by donating food. We hand out non-perishable, simple food
items, such as spaghetti sauce, spaghetti noodles, mac-n-cheese, canned ham/chicken
/tuna, beef stew or similar, chicken noodle soup, corn, green beans, fruit, peanut butter,
jelly, side dish (noodles or rice), crackers, granola bars or similar, cereal. We could use
chicken, ham, jelly, tomato soup, and cereal. Thank for your donations!
(Usually) Open: Monday – Thursday from 10 AM – 4 PM and Friday from 10 AM – 3 PM.

Altar Flowers
The flowers on the altar are presented to the Glory of God … Jan. 1-29 (Open)
Sponsoring Altar Flowers: Sponsoring the altar flowers is a beautiful way to give thanks
to God for someone in your life, past or present. We will acknowledge these honorariums and remembrances in
the Sunday bulletin and monthly newsletter. The 2023 Altar Flowers Chart is posted on the bulletin board
in the Second Street entrance (by Frank Hall). If you would like to present flowers in honor of or in memory of
a loved one, please check the chart to see what dates are available, then write your information on the chart.
You order the flowers from the florist of your choice. New to sponsoring flowers at CUMC: beside the chart,
there is a yellow “How to” guide sheet for sponsoring flowers to help you with the process.
