Christians should not be surprised since God predicted “In the last days perilous
times shall come” (2 Timothy 3:1). The word “perilous,” also translated as “difficult”
or “extremely violent,” is only used one other time in scripture (Matthew 8:28).
These dangerous days are intensifying in the countdown to Christ’s coming.
In Matthew 24:37, Jesus said those days would be “like the days of Noah.” Just
before the great flood, “the earth was filled with violence” (Genesis 6:11). The
ultimate terrorist or “shooter,” of that day was Lamech (Genesis 4:23) who sought
vengeance by killing 77 because of the one who had wounded him.
We must reflect and not react. This shooting came from a bizarre behavior by Jared
Loughner. Demon-controlled people have also shot pastors, church members,
and others, so violence is not necessarily politically oriented. We should not
automatically tie this with any political party or movement nor should it be used
as a weapon to stifle debate on immigration, the right to own a gun, or debates
on healthcare. Because we believe that people are basically sinful, we believe
in military defense as a nation; wise churches will also have competent security
teams.
We are reminded of the need for character transformation, which is the only
lasting answer to violence and hatred. Patricia Maisch knocked a magazine out of
the hand of the shooter as he was trying to reload; Roger Salzgeber and Bill Badger
tackled the gunman. So we should aggressively share the gospel and speak out
on moral and ethical issues. We must return to the prayer which was ruled illegal
in public schools by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 17, 1963: “Almighty God, we
acknowledge our dependence upon Thee and beg Thy blessings upon us, our
parents, our teachers, and our country.” Pray that our almighty God will restore
the hedge of protection around our nation. May we understand that when e-v-i-l
is spelled backwards it becomes l-i-v-e. Christ’s “saving life” is our glorious hope
in perilous times. The slain nine-year old was born on 9/11. Pray that many will be
“born again” even in dark days to eternal life.
