Content
Festivals are delightful events for the Filipinos. It is a part and bundle of our culture. Other
festivals are geared towards cultural preservation and tourism. Our life is surrounded by festivities
and celebrations. Through it we can express our thanksgiving and celebration of blessings from God.

Philippine theatre comes in a variety of forms and these include religious and non-religious acts or
productions, usually shown or performed during festivals.

 Shadow puppetry or Shadow play- is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment that uses
shadow of flat jointed puppets which are held together with sticks or thread to create movement.
 Drama – is a narrative fiction represented in performance. It can be performed in atheater or on
radio or television. It is a genre of poetry that can have a dramatic mode.
 Comedia or Moro-Moro – is a folk drama created by Spanish priests. It depicted battles between
Christian and Muslims. It is dance which is played based off two poems the “awit” and “corrido”. It
usually shows the struggles between Christians and Non-Christians.
 Sarswela or Zarzuela – is a play with song and dances written in prose, depicting the peculiarity
of romantic love among Filipino characters.
 Senakulo– most famous event during the season of Lent, usually depicting stories and events
from the Old and New Testaments related to life, sufferings and death of Jesus Christ.
