You have to talk for ten minutes about this subject. Which mathematical notion(s) do you
recognize? The questions may help you, but answering all of them is not compulsory: you
can simply explain a way to solve an exercise, even if you can’t find the solution.
A pendulum consists of a mass suspended at the end of a string.
When this pendulum oscillates, its period is the time that elapses between
two passes in the same direction, vertically. We show that the period p, in s,
is given as a function of the length l of the wire, in m, by the formula :
p(l) = 2√l.
Jacob has an old pendulum and would like to know the time that
elapses between two passes, his pendulum measures 125cm and the length
of his string is 78% of the pendulum.

Questions

1. What is the length of the string of Jacob's pendulum ?

2. Deduce its period.
3. What would have to be the length of the string for the period to be equal to 1 second?
4. We propose to determine the length of a pendulum whose period is 3s.
A) Justify that the problem is equivalent to solving the equation √ l = 1,5.
B) Solve this equation graphically and conclude.
