This instant oil pressure oliminates the time requitad or the rotary gaarpump inthe governor to build up enough oil prassure to move the linkage. This producesa faster start, which consarvas starting r and, in vessels with direct reversible engines, improves maneuverability. When the boosteris inactive, a piston is held at one end of acylindor by 4 spring. The cylinderisfull of oi! Supplied from a ling from the governor's sump. Compressed air applied to the side of the piston ‘opposite this oil forces the piston against the oit, which tlows through ports at the other end of the cylinder to the governor. When air is removed from the piston, the spring roturns the piston to its rest position. Reduced pressurein the cylinder causes oil to tlow intoit trom the sump. Check valves at ail oi! ports allow oil to tlow in only ‘one diraction. This prevents oil in the booster from flowing back to the governor's sump when the booster operates, and oil in the booster outlet lines: from flowing back into the booster when it is inactive. TYPES OF BOOSTERS There are three types of boosters: A low-volume, single-cylinder booster © A medium-volume, double-cylinder (tandem) booster + Ahigh-volume, two-stage booster ste {tapces 01 an6 gown ‘Sinden pecans Gl sump ov pressure . sf Sac ures #2 7 oe eat ee oa ota ot fest lunge i we servomoror Lao som pine ees same / lt cove “ x : ewe spat | . : a “ibe s fo Saws Figure 1-1 Schematic of Single Booster Connections to PG-Type of Governor Boosters aro available with different air-to-oil Pressure ratios, making them suitable for both high ‘and low air pressure applications: Model Type Pressure Ratio {Ol Out to Air tn) 8901-037, 043 Single-cylinder 9901-051 Single-cylindar 8901-065 Tandem 9901-067 Tandem 8901-091 Two-stage ‘8901-103, Two-stage Single-cylinder boosters supply enough ail for governors with small and medium work outputs, such as UG-8 and -40, EGB-10 and-13, 3161, and PG ‘governors with outputs of 12 and 17 foot-pounds. Tandem boosters, with larger volumes of oil and three oil-outlets, are appropriate tor PG-28 and -58, EG-29 and -58, and PG-TM 88 governors. ‘Two-stage, high-volume boosters mest the boost- oil requirements for PG, EGB, and PG-TM governors with 200, 300. and 00 foot-pound power cases. SINGLE-CYLINDER BOOSTER (Figures 1-1 and 1-3) Single-cylinder boosters have two oil outlets: one is unrestricted and one has a built-in orifice-type restriction. Outlet no. 1 (unrestricted) is connected directly tothe governor's oil pressure system. Outlet no. 2 (restricted) can beused to Pressurizethespeed ‘setting servo which compresses the speeder spring Bh rnin Bihar tas Cyrene eustind ‘of PGA, PGPL, and PGG governors equipped with any shutdown feature, A single-cylinder booster nas two air inlets, one restricted and one unrestricted. Using the restricted air Iniet results in slower movement of the fuel rack. TANDEM BOOSTER (Figures 1-2 and 1-4} Tandem boosters have two cylinders and three oil ‘outlets. Outlet no. 1 is unrestricted; the other two ‘outlets are restricted by an adjustabie needle valve. Oil outlet no. + Is connected to the governor's accumulator; outlet no, 2, to the speed setting servo (of PGA, PGPL, and PGG governors equipped with any shutdown feature); and outlet no. 3, to a point directly under the power piston. Moutiet no. 2is used, its needle valve determines the rate at which the speadar spring is compressed. The ngedie valvein outlet no. 3contrais therate at which the powar piston moves. TWO-STAGE BOOSTER (Figures 1-5, 2-4, and 3-3) ‘Two-stage boosters have three oil outlets, but atwo- stage feature allows oil to flow through outiet no. 2 before it flows through the other two outlets. In most applications, outlet no. 1 supplies oil to the Power piston in the governar; outlet no. 2, to the speed setting servo (of PGA, PGPL, and PGG governors equipped with any shutdown feature): and outlet no. 3, to tha ralay piston, purtern2 — so0ere eSeaections oureres Figure 1-2, Schematic of Tandem Booster Connections 19 PG-Type of Governor CHOW BBLa~ITTIW wp fee tooe ser 9901 961] Wasas stunssau4 YONUIAGD O1 UH ABTLNO UO sLdN G2-.8/t 10H NBA CnosINYWONILuWis uy aNIONA Wows APINI 44a e278 ‘G1OsINvW ONLY EAS UlY ANIONS Would aD1JIHO (2601 BO HLUALSINI LAN Lz:.0/ gu9s LIMIT BxOwLS Weao'9) 01 eer 2n Wanton vio eve) oe (0382) z6t mn gvins YoNuaAO9 WOES ASINE TIO SL4N S76 CH LSTLNO WO ALAN ZR tHOND HOLST SECTION 2 INSTALLING AND ADJUSTING A BOOSTER SERVOMOTOR mal ‘The engine, turbine, or other type of prime mover should be equipped with an overspeed {overtemperature, or overpressure, where applicable) shutdown device(s), that operates {totally independent of the prime mover controt device(s) to protect against runaway or ‘damage to the engine, turbine, or other type of prime mover with possible personal injury (F loss of ite should the mechanical-hydrausle governor(s) of electric contral{s), the actuator(s), tuel contrat{s}, the driving mechanism(s), the linkage(s), or the con- trolled device(s) fat. GENERAL RULES Observe the following rules when you install a Woodward booster servomotor. LOCATION install the booster servomotor at a lower level than tne governor to prevent air from being trapped in the booster and oil ines. Olt LINES Oil lines must slope up from the booster to the governor with a minimum of loops and tends. STARTING-AIR VALVE A starting-air valve (supplied by the customer) must bbe installed in the air line to the booster. This valve must admit compressed air to the booster at the same time that starting air is supplied 10 the engine, and it must vent the air cylinder of the booster to atmosphere when starting air is removed from the ‘engine. Air pressure at the booster air inlet must not excead 3500 kPa (300 psi) from the booster's oll chamber, the (ubing, and the governor betore you start the engine, by cycilng the booster platon with start-air or alr froma separate ‘source. Fallure to purge air completely may result in sluggish governor response. INSTALLING AND ADJUSTING A SINGLE- CYLINDER BOOSTER—Models 8901-037, -043, and -051 (Figures 1-3, 2-1, and 2-2) Reter to the general rules at the beginning of this section, Figures 2-1 and 2-2 show locations of inlet and outlet ports on Woodward governors with which a single- cylinder booster can be used. Figure 1-3 shows locations of ports and the adjustment screw on a single-cylinder booster. Install % inch (10 mm) steel tubing from the sump of the governor to the oil inlet an the booste {install % inch (6 mm) steel tubing from oil outlet no.1 ‘on the booster to the powor piston (the inlet marked “OIL FROM BOOSTER OUTLET-1") of the governor. It the governor is a PGA, PGPL, or PGG equipped with any shutdown feature, install % inch (6 mm) steel tubing from oil outlet no.2 on the booster to the speedsetting servo (the inlet marked “OIL FROM BOOSTER OUTLET-2) of the governor Otherwise, Idave oll outlet no. 2 plugged ‘Connect a line containing an alr-starting valve trom the starting-air supply to the appropriate air inlet on the booster. Use the infet with the built-in orifice if you want to move the fuel racks at a slower 1 Fill the governor with oil 19 the proper level (rater to the installation manual for the governor) When all air and cil connections are secure, purge air from the booster and oil ines by cycling airto the booster from a remote source without cranking the engine, Add oil to the governor as needed, ‘When thereis no moreairin the booster and oil line: ‘set the initial opening of the fuel racks by adjusting the stroke of the booster piston. Turn the booster limit screw counterclockwise to increase starting uel, and clockwise to decrease it. This screw ft the intake stroke of the booster andthe volume of oil ‘supplied to the governar in one stroke of tha booster setvomoter. INSTALLING AND ADJUSTING A TANDEM BOOSTER — Models 8901-065 and 8901-067 (Figures 1-4 and 2-3) NOTE On PGA governors, decals indicating whore to connect lines from the booster do not apply to tandem boosters, Refer to Figure 2-3 when you connect a tandem booster to. a PGA governor. Refer to the general rules at the beginning of this section Figure 2-3 shows locations of outlet and inlet ports on governors with which a tandem booster can be used. Figure 1-4 shows locations of adjustment Screws and ports on a tandem booster. Connect % inch (10 mm) steel tubing from the sump of the governor to the ail inlet on the booster, and fram oil outlet no, + of the booster to theaccumulator of the governor. On PGA, PGPL, and PGG governors equipped with any shutdown feature, connect % inch (6 mm) steel tubing from cll outfet no. 2 on the booster to the speed setting servo of the governor. On PGA, PGPL, and PGG governors, connect “inch (6 mm) steel tubing from oil outlet no. 3 on the booster to the pawer piston of the governor. Connect a tine with an air-starting vaive from the starting-air supply to the air inlet on tne booster. Fill the governor with oil to the correct level (rater to ‘tho installation manual for the governor) When all oil and air connections are secure, purge air from the booster and oil lines by cycling airto the ‘booster from a remote source without cranking the ‘engine. Add more oil to the governor as needed ‘When therais no moreairin the booster andoillines, limit the volume of oil going to the governor by adjusting the two oil volume adjusting screws. The positions of these screws determine the maximum volume of oil supplied by the booster. This, in turn. determines the maximum travel of the fuel racks. Turn the screws clockwise to reduce the travelof the racks and counterclockwise to increase the travel. Adjust the needle valves in oil outlets no. 2 and no. 3. I outlet no. 2 is used. its needle valve controls the rate of oil flow to the speeder spring servo, which determines how fast the speeder spring servo moves. The needto valve in outlet no. 3 controls the rate at which the power piston moves. Turn the needie valve clockwise to restrict oll flow and counter- clockwise to increase flow. NOTE Outlets no. 2 and no. 3 are connected to ‘separate cylinders. Quttet no. 1 is con- ngcted to both cylinders, with check valves preventing flow between the cylinders. Unequal amounts of of! flow through the feo outlets if the oif volume adjusting screws are adjusted unequally. tisusualty best to adjust both of these screws the same distance and regulate the rate of oll How through outlets no. 2 and no. 3 with their respective neadie valves. INSTALLING AND ADJUSTING A TWO- STAGE BOOSTER—Models 8901-091 and 8901-103 (Figures 1-5 and 2-4) NOTE On PGA, PGPL, and PGG governors, decals indicating where to connect lines from the booster do not apply fo two- stage boosters, Rofer to Figure 2-4 when you connect & two-stage booster t0 2 PGA, PGPL, of PGG governor. Refer to the general rules at the beginning of this section, Connect %sinch (12 mm} steel tubing from the sump. of the governor to the oil inlet port on the booster, and from oil outlet no. 1 on the booster to the power piston of the governor. On PGA, PGPL, and PGG governors equipped with any shutdown feature, connect $/16 inch (8 mm) steel tubing from oil outlet no. 2 on the booster to the speed setting servo of the governor. Connect §/16 inch (8 mm) steel tubing from oll outlet no. 3 on the booster to tne relay piston of the governor. NOTE W you have an EGB-200, -300, or -500 actuator, jeave oil outiet no. 3 of the booster plugged and /oosen the plug in outlet no. 2. Turn the shuttle piston adjusting screw fully clockwise, thereby opening up the passage to outlet no. 1 foinerwise. the booster servomotor remains inactive). Tighten the plug in outlet no. 2. Connect a fine with an air-starting valve trom the starting-air supply to the air infet on the booster. Fill the governor with oil to the correct level (refer to the installation manuat of the governor). When all air and oil connoctions are secure, purge air from the booster and oil fines by cycling air from a remote source to the booster without cranking tHe ‘engine. Add oil to the governor as needed When there is no more air in the booster and oil lines, regulate the volume of oil going to the governor by adjusting the stroke adjusting screw. you are not using an EG8-200, -300, or -500 actuator, adjust tne shuttle piston adjusting scrow and the needle valve in oil outlet no. 3 Remember that © The stroke adjusting screw limits the volumeot oil going to the governor through oil outlets no. ‘Vandno. 3; this controls the maximum amount of fuel output during a booster-assisted start. + If you use outlet no. 2, tho shuttle piston adjusting screw limits the volume of oil going fo the speed setting servo through oil outlet no. 2 + The needie valve limits the rate of flow of oil through ot outlet no. 3; his controls the rate at wiich the output shalt of the governor moves. The needle valve setting also limits the stroke of the power piston in the governor. Turn the adjusting screws clockwise to reduce the volume of oil to the governor and fuct to the engine: turn if counterclockwise to increase volume, Turn the needle valves clockwise to reduce the rate and volume of ait flaw, 2nd counterclockwise 10 Increase the rate and volume. Governors Used With Two-Stage Boosters SECTION 3 PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION HOW SINGLE-CYLINDER AND TANDEM BOOSTERS OPERATE FIRST PHASE OF SINGLE-CYLINDER AND TANDEM BOOSTER OPERATION Refer to Figure 3-1 (Figure 3-1 represents a single- cylinder booster; a tandem booster has two pistons: and three oil outlets, but its principle of operation is tho same.) Wnen compressed air ontorsthe booster, the piston(s) mova(s) up, forcing oil through the outlets to the governor's pressurized oil system. The governor's power piston moves to increase fuel. Acheck valvein the oil inlet prevents oil om flowing from the booster back to the sump in the governor. SECOND PHASE OF SINGLE-CYLINDER AND TANDEM BOOSTER OPERATION Refer to Figure 3-2 (Figure 3-2 represents a single cylinder booster, a tandem booster has two pistons nd three il outlets, but its principle of operation is the same.) ‘When starting air is removed, the booster is vented to atmosphere through the starting-atr valve (cus- tomer supplied) in the booster'sair ine. Spring force ‘returns the booster’s piston(s) to its (the:r) original position(s). Oi! stops flowing out of the booster. Reduced pressure in the booster causes sump oil to fiow back into the booster. The booster is ready to start again Check valves in the oil outlets prevent off from flowing back through theoil outlets iato the booster. Single Booster, Phase 1 [donmsane Figure 3-2. Single Booster, Phase 2 HOW A TWO-STAGE BOOSTER OPERATES FIRST PHASE OF TWO-STAGE BOOSTER OPERATION Refer to Figure 3-3. When compressed air enters the booster, the main piston moves to the right, forcing oil to the shuttle piston cavity and moving the shuttle piston up. The shuttie piston forces oll through oil outlet no. 2 and blocks oil outlets no. 1 and 90. 3. The shuttle piston adjusting screw limits the stroke of the shuttle piston, which limits the amount of supplied through oil outlet no. 2. SECOND PHASE OF TWO-STAGE BOOSTER OPERATION Reter to Figure 3-4. When the shuttle piston reaches the end of its stroke, ituncovers the passages to outlets no, 1 and no. 3; olf flow through outlet no. 2 ceases, Oil remaining in the booster flows throug: outlets no. 1 and no. 3to the relay and power pistons in the governor, moving them to increase fuel. The needle valve in cutiet no. 3 limits the amount of hat goes through this outlet and its rate of flow. This. in turn, imits the stroke of the power piston in the governor and the rate at which tuetis supplied to the engine, The stroke adjusting screw limits the stroke of the main booster piston, which limits the total amount of ‘supplied to the governor by the booster. Check valves prevent oil trom flowing trom the booster into the governor’s sump. THIRD PHASE OF TWO-STAGE BOOSTER OPERATION Refer to Figure 3-5. The airsideof the main piston is vented to atmosphere ‘rough the starting-air valve. Spring forces return he main booster piston and shuttle piston to their original positions. Reduced pressure in thie booster ‘sauses Sump oil to flow back into the booster. ‘Check valves prevent oi from flowing into the dooster from the off outlet lines. 14 Figure 3-3.
