Activity 5: Using Manipulatives (Realia) in Teaching

Instructions:

Present to the class a sample manipulative (realia) that you have used or plan
to use in your teaching of Science. (Note: You can also innovate and introduce
your own manipulative.)

Complete the table attached below on the key points to be considered in

utilizing the manipulative that you will introduce to the class. And make a
PowerPoint presentation as you introduce your chosen manipulative to the class.

Key Points in Utilizing the (Name of the Manipulative)

Manipulative
What is the general description of In education, realia often regarded as a
the manipulative? medium of information that is most easy to
access and can attract the attention of
learners. As a medium of information, realia
able to explain abstract concepts with little or
no written or oral statements. By interacting
directly with realia, hopefully, things are less
clear, when explained verbally, it can be clear
and easy to understand. According to Pribadi
(2017: 42), realia able to stimulate the user's
imagination for real experiences. The direct
experience of using realia as a learning tool is
touching objects and observing parts of
objects .

the utilization of the

What educational theories and Constructivism
principles support the utilization
of the manipulative in your Basically a theory -- based on observation and
scientific study -- about how people learn. It
teaching? Explain further. says that people construct their own
understanding and knowledge of the world,
through experiencing things and reflecting on
those experiences. When we encounter
something new, we have to reconcile it with
our previous ideas and experience, maybe
changing what we believe, or maybe
discarding the new information as irrelevant.
In any case, we are active creators of our own
knowledge. To do this, we must ask
questions, explore, and assess what we know.

Learning by doing –

It's a hands-on approach to learning, meaning

students must interact with their environment
in order to adapt and learn.

Why do you recommend the "Tell me and I forget, show me and I

utilization of the manipulative in remember, involve me and I understand”
teaching certain concepts or
topics? - Benjamin Franklin

Based on this saying, we should teach our

students how to learn the topics by hands on
approach so that they can understand fully
what are you trying to discuss to them. If they
can actually see or touch the object, they can
easily understood the concept of the topic.
