FAR AWAY, YET SO CLOSE

Although Sweden is located in the far north of Europe, it’s easy to get here. Depending on
where in Europe your journey starts, it takes between two and four hours to fly to Stockholm,
the capital of Sweden.

Once in Stockholm, you can
choose to go by plane or train to
all our university cities.
By plane it takes about one hour,
by train it takes between 3,5 and
5 hours. You can also go by bus,
which takes about 5 to 6 hours.
The distance between our campu-
ses in Sundsvall and Östersund is
180 kilometres. Between Sundsvall
and Härnösand, the distance is 50
kilometres.

Härnösand, Sundsvall and Östersund. We are one of the ten largest institutions of higher
education in Sweden. Although we have three campuses, all your courses will be offered at one

Härnösand is one of the oldest preserved in the town centre,

EXCHANGE STUDIES
Exchange students are students coming to Mid Sweden University for one or two semesters
within the framework of an exchange agreement. The length of the exchange period is determined
by the agreement between Mid Sweden University and the students’ home universities, but the
maximum is always two semesters.

Our programmes and courses
As an exchange student, you may
apply for courses at Bachelor’s
and Master’s level in the fields
of Social sciences, Engineering
and sustainable development,
Humanities, Information tech-
nology, Media, Natural sciences,
Electronics, Engineering, Mathe-
matics and Teacher education.
You may apply to study part of a
Bachelor’s or Master’s programme
or apply for single courses.
How to apply
If your university has an exchange
agreement with Mid Sweden
University, you are welcome to
apply to become an exchange
student. The admission of ex-
change students is granted to
qualified students nominated by
their home institution.
The first thing you need to do is
to contact your home university
for futher information regaring
application processes. After that,
you

No documents need to be sent by
mail or e-mail, but you have to
upload some required documents

How do you like it in Östersund
and Sweden?
I am a fan of Östersund. I decided
to live in this city because I am a
climber and I wanted to combine
this with my studies and my
work. The environment here is
incredible; 15 minutes by bicycle
and you can be rock climbing,
skiing, kayaking, running in the
forest… and the list continues.
There are many people that move
here for this reason, so it is possible
to share all these activities with
great groups of friends. The
quality of life here is outstanding.
I hope that Östersund develops
sustainably and manages to
preserve its unique environment.

Higher education in Sweden
The study system in Sweden may be different from what you are used to. Here is some basic information
about studies at Swedish universities.

Levels and degrees

Higher education in Sweden is divided into three levels.
1. The first level - equivalent to the undergraduate level. It concludes with the award of a Bachelor’s Degree.
2. The second level - equivalent to the Master’s level. It concludes with the award of a Master’s Degree.
3. The third level - equivalent to postgraduate studies. It concludes with the award of a Licentiate Degree or a PhD.

The normal workload is 30 credits
per semester and 60 credits per
academic year. The number of
credits assigned by Mid Sweden
University corresponds to The
European Credit Transfer System
(ECTS). 60 credits at Mid Sweden
University equal 60 ECTS credits.
In ECTS, 60 credits represent the
workload of an academic year
of study. In general, one week of
full-time studies is equivalent
to 1.5 credits. Full-time means
a workload of forty hours per
week.
ACADEMIC CALENDAR
The academic year at Swedish
universities usually consists of
two semesters, each lasting 20
weeks. The autumn semester
runs from the beginning of
September to mid-January, and
the spring semester runs
from mid-January until the
beginning of June. There is no
official break in the academic
calendar for Christmas; however,
in practice there is usually a
break for Christmas around the
time of the public holidays in
Sweden.
This means that you are free of
lectures on approximately 20

Accommodation
The estimated cost of living per
month in Sweden is a minimum
of SEK 7,000. It includes accom-
modation, internet/telephone,
food and insurance. Mid Sweden
University cooperates closely with
student housing companies in
each campus city and recommends
five different housing companies
in Härnösand, Sundsvall and
Östersund. The choice of housing
varies, but all types of student
accommodation are generally of
a high standard. Depending on
the area and the type of room, the
rent varies from approximately
2000–4000 SEK per month.
