D. Solve the following problems completely.
1. Juan dela Cruz wants to enclose a rectangular plot with 400 ft of fencing material. What
should be the dimensions of the area if the enclosed plot is to be as large as possible? What is the
largest area?
Given:
 400 ft of fencing material
Required:
 dimensions of the area
 largest area
Representation:
 Let 400 ft of fencing material be the perimeter(P)
 Let P be the perimeter of the enclosed plot
 Let l be the length of the rectangular plot
 Let w be the width of the rectangular plot
Formula:
 Perimeter : P=2(l+ w)
 Area: A=lw
Solution:
 P=2( l+ w)  A=lw
400=2 ( l+ w ) A=l ( 200−l )

The dimensions of the enclosed plot area are 100 ft ×100 ft to get the
maximum size.

2. The Marikina shoe company will produce a special-style shoe if the order is large enough to
provide reasonable profit. To produce special-style shoe, the company incurs a fixed cost of
Php10 000 for the production set-up. The variable cost is Php 30 per pair and each pair sells for
Php 80.
Given:
 Php10 000 (Production set-up)
 Php 30 per pair (variable cost)
 Php 80 per pair (price of shoes)

A. Find the expression for profit P.

Representation:
 Let x be the number of shoes sold by the company
Formula:
 Profit : P=Totalrevenue−Total cost ∨P ( x)=R ( x)−C ( x )
Solution:
 P=80 x−(10 000+30 x)
P=80 x−30 x−10 000
P=50 x−10 000
The expression for profit is P=50 x−10 000 .

B. What is the break-even point?

Representation/Formula:
 Let P( x )=0
Solution:
 P( x )=0
50 x−10 000=0
50 x 10 000
=
50 50
x=200
To break even, the Marikina Shoe Company needs to sell 200 pairs of shoes.
