BREASTFEEDING TECHNIQUE

BREASTFEEDING
o is the process of feeding a mother's breast milk to her infant, either directly from the breast or by expressing
(pumping out) the milk from the breast and bottle-feeding it to the infant.
o one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival.
World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that breastfeeding begin within the first hour of a baby's life
and continue as often and as much as the baby wants.

BREASTFEEDING POSITIONS

1. SIDE-LYING WITH MODIFIED CRADLE


o The baby lies next to the mother with their bodies facing each other . If a pillow under your arm is
uncomfortable, try placing your baby in the crook of your arm. This way, you will not be likely to roll over on
the baby should you doze off.

2. FOOTBALL OR CLUTCH
o Baby’s head is supported by the hand on the same side as breast to be used for feeding; baby’s body is
supported on a pillow and tucked under the arm on the same side as breast to be used for feeding.

3. CRADLE HOLD
o the baby is held in the crook or elbow area of the arm on same side as breast to be used for feeding; mother
supports breast with opposite hand; baby’s body is rolled in toward mother’s body, so they are belly-to-belly.

4. CROSS-CRADLE
o The baby’s head is supported by the hand opposite the breast to be used for feeding; mother supports breast
with hand; baby is rolled in toward mother’s body belly-to-belly.

5. LAID-BACK
o Mother leaning back in a recliner or reclining bed. Her baby is lying on her stomach and is pressed against
her. She can support the side of her baby’s head if her baby cannot hold it himself/herself. In this position,
both the mother and her baby can relax.

IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE BREASTFEEDING TECHNIQUE


o To ensure efficient milk transfer.
o To ensures sufficient milk supply.
o To prevent mum becoming sore.
o Relaxed mum.
o Happy contented baby.
DE LATCHING
o When an infant finishes breastfeeding, they will open their mouth and let go of mother’s breast on their own.
However, there may be times when the child just doesn’t let go, and the mother should be the one to remove
them from her breast.

BURPING
o Keep your baby upright after feeding for 10 to 15 minutes, or longer if your baby spits up or has GERD to
help prevent the milk from coming back up.

HOW TO BURP A BABY


1. Baby’s chin rest on your shoulder.
2. Support head and neck.
3. Babies sit on lap.
4. Support chest with base of hand.
5. Cup chin with thumb and index finger
6. Lay baby across lap.
7. Belly rest on your thigh.
8. Hold head higher than chest.
