The graph illustrates the number of customers travelling three railway systems in Great Britain between

the period of 1950 and 2004/5. Over this span of 54 years, national rail network has been at the first
rank of favourite transportation, followed by London Underground as the second choice. The remaining
light rail and metro systems has not been chosen by a lot of commuters.

The highest number of national rail network users was 1,110 million in 1958 while the lowest was 600
million in 1980. Regarding London Underground, this figure was constant from 1950 to 1978. However,
there was a slight decline in the number of passengers using the second rank of railway system from 600
million to around 550 million and it hit the bottom in 1980 with under 500 million. From the year 1980
onwards, there was a significant increase in the number of all three railway system commuters. It is
expected to have an upward trend in the amount of journeys using railway systems in Great Britain.

In conclusion, national rail network remains the most popular transportation among three railway
systems in Great Britain over the period 1950 to 2004/5 while London Underground are becoming
increasingly chosen by customers.
