Concept Notes:
The author’s purpose is his or her reason for writing a text, paragraph, or line. Every
written material is done to serve certain purposes. A writer has a specific purposes to achieve for his
listeners or readers. There are three main reasons or purposes of writing, and these are:
1. To persuade – getting the readers or listeners to move or leading them to arrive at an
agreement by appealing to their emotions and feelings.
Examples of Texts That Are Written to Persuade: advertisements, campaign speeches,
persuasive letters or notes
2. To inform – the author intends to provide his readers facts, data or a body of knowledge or
information.
Examples of Texts That Are Written to Inform: expository essays or articles; instructions
or directions, encyclopedias or other reference texts
3. To entertain – the author’s purpose is to please his listeners and amuse his readers.
Examples of Texts that Are Written to Entertain: stories, poems, dramas, songs
Identifying the Author’s Purpose
1. Is the text a poem, story, or play? (if “yes”=entertain; if “no”=go to next)
2. Does the text mainly give facts and info? (if “yes”=inform; if “no” go to next)
3. Does the text make arguments? (if “yes”=persuade; if “no”=start over)

Activity A: Read the descriptions of each item and determine the author’s purpose. Then, in a
