INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to this module on the purpose of various types of informational
text that we read.

Activities given are intended to help you, learners, understand and identify
the different purposes of informational texts. It is important to understand why
an author is writing something. As a reader, knowing the purpose or intent that
the writer has for creating the piece of work helps you to learn information from them.

To make the most of them, you must:

1. Read the learning objectives set for the module.

2. Take your time in reading the contents of each activity. Write down points for
clarification. You may discuss these points with your teacher.

3. Perform all activities and answer all worksheets. The activities are designed to
enhance your understanding of purpose of informational text. The activities will also
give you an idea how well you understand the lessons. Review the lessons if
necessary, until you have achieved a satisfactory level of understanding.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
- identify the purpose of various types of informational/factual text.

LESSON PROPER
What’s New?

When an author writes a text, he or she has a purpose for writing. Sometimes,
it is merely to entertain or tell an engaging story. Sometimes, it is to inform the reader
of something. At other times, the author is attempting to make an argument or share
an opinion, on hopes of persuading the reader to his or her point of view regarding a
topic.
Read the poem below.

TREES
By: Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see A tree that may in summer wear
A poem lovely as a tree. A nest of robins in her hair;

1
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast; Who intimately lives with rain.

A tree that looks at God all day, Poems are made by fools like me,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray; But only God can make a tree.

What line from the poem made you happy?

What do you think is the purpose of the author in writing the poem?
