Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

What’s New

Readers are frequently frustrated when they meet unfamiliar vocabulary words as they read.
But jumping up and grabbing a dictionary takes too much time. Readers need to take what they
know and gather clues in the text to decode the meaning of vocabulary.

One of the important skills to improve vocabulary for effective reading and listening is
inferring unknown words from context and using word structure to decode unfamiliar
vocabulary. A useful technique involves studying the word structure to identify word roots and
understand word parts or affixes (suffixes and prefixes).

In this lesson, you will learn the significance of inferring meaning to help you understand the
text you are reading. Before you explore more about the topic, let us look at a reading passage
that will require you to decode some complex technical terms (highlighted) you will meet in
the text by inferring the meaning of unfamiliar words using affixes, roots, and other strategies.

Directions: Read the passage and then answer the questions that follow. Analyze the word
structure of the unknown/highlighted words to work out their meaning.

This piece of historical article focuses on the documentation of Spanish

records pertaining to the establishment of the town of Baliwag, Bulacan in the late
1500s up to 1800s which depicted the missionary activities of Spanish friars including
the accounts of towns and settlements which they had founded within their jurisdiction.
This preliminary bibliographic survey yielded 20 documents with the earliest imprint
date of 1763. Seven documents were written by Spanish historians, 3 documents were
written by American historians and the remaining 10 documents were written by
contemporary Filipino authors and historians. This brief survey redefines the religious,
social, cultural, and economic formation which the town of Baliwag underwent during
Spanish colonial period.

Do you understand the words? Yes or No? ______

Do you consider them difficult words? Yes or No? ______
Can you give the meaning of each word? Yes or No? ______

As mentioned earlier in the previous part of this module, it is possible to understand

the meaning of these words by using the technique that involves studying the word structure
by identifying the word roots and understand word parts or affixes (suffixes and prefixes).

The English language has units of meanings. The smallest unit of meaning in the
language is called a morpheme. Some morphemes can stand alone as words. Some
morphemes are called base or root words.

A root word has its own meaning and stands on its own. Play, follow, build are
examples of root words. You can make new words from it by adding beginnings or prefixes.
Word roots can also be combined with suffixes or endings.

4
Some letters are added to the root words to form new words. If the letters are added
before a word, they are called prefixes. If the letters are added after a word, they are called
suffixes.

Take a look at the same difficult words included in the reading passage again and
study how to use word morphology or word structure to work out the meaning of the unknown
words. Analyze the table below.

Prefixes have meanings that come from ancient Greek and Latin. Among the most
familiar prefixes are those that mean no.

Among the common no prefixes are:

il im in ir dis mis non un
Examples:
illegal immature inattentive
irregular disable misbehave
noncompliance unknown

One group of prefixes can show position. These are:

ad inter trans super sub in
Examples:
adventure international transport
superhero subtitle incur

One group of prefixes show time. These prefixes show time:

pre ante re ex post
Examples:
preplan antecedent renew
postwar ex-convict

5
Suffixes can make a word/stem of a word a noun, verb, or adjective. A suffix can also
make a transition in the degree of an adjective or in the tense of the verb.

Some suffixes indicate “persons”. Examples of these are:

-or -er -ist -ian
They mean one who makes, studies, does or performs.
Examples:
governor painter
pianist musician

Some suffixes appear so often at the end of adjectives. These

suffixes are called adjective suffixes. These are:
-ive -able -ful -al -ous -ish -ent -ary -some
Examples:
selective enjoyable boastful
logical glorious foolish
confident honorary tiresome

Some suffixes are added to verbs to form nouns. These suffixes

are called noun suffixes. These common noun suffixes are:
-age -ment -hood -ism -dom -ance -ness -ion
Examples:
