III. INSTRUCTIONAL
A. Setting up the stage
Let’s have a recap about the definition of adjectives and give examples
The teacher will show a picture to the pupils.
Who can describe the picture?

B. Establishing a Purpose
Can you give any idea of what they are they talking about based on the picture that have
been shown.

C. Presentation
Call two boys to read the short dialogue

Paeng: Hey, Justine. I heard you joined the social service club in our community.

Justine: That’s right. I am one of the volunteers who distribute relief goods to
calamity victims in the evacuation centers.

Paeng: Really? Then you must be busier than ever because three strong typhoons
have already hit our country for the past two months. And the most recent typhoon
that hit last week displaced a lot of families from their homes.
Justine: That typhoon was the strongest. The flood was higher than before because
the dams overflowed. I really pity those whose houses were destroyed. If you
could only see the pain in their faces.

Paeng: I feel bad because I sometimes wish for heavy rains so school would be
canceled. I didn’t realize that other people’s lives and properties were at stake.

Justine: Yes, we do fail to realize that we are more fortunate than other people because
we are the least affected by the calamities that strike. That’s why I joined the Social
Service Club. I want to help the poor victims in the best way I could.

Paeng: You know what, you inspire me. Maybe I should also do volunteer work to help the
typhoon victims. It’s more productive and it’s better than doing nothing but watch TV and
play video games at home, don’t you think?

Comprehension Check-Up
1. What club did Justine join? What does he do as a member of the club?
2. Why did Justine join the club?
3. In what ways can you help the victims of calamities such as typhoons?

D. Teaching/Modelling
Teacher reads the following sentences. Observe how the nouns in each sentence are
compared.
1. The recent typhoon was the strongest to hit the country.
2. The flood was higher than before because the dams overflowed.
3. We are more fortunate than the other people because we are not affected by such
calamities.
4. I wanted to help the poor victims in the best way I could.
5. Doing volunteer work is more productive and is better than doing nothing.

 Adjectives change form to show or compare the quality of two or more nouns and
pronouns. In sentence 2, 3 and 5, the comparison is made between two persons or things.
In sentence 1 and 4, the comparison is made among three or more people.

When adjectives show comparison they come in the following degrees:

1.Positive – indicates the presence of a quality. No comparison is being made.

Examples: They are rich
I am poor.
2. Comparative – two persons or things are being compared.
Exampes: They are richer than I
I am poorer now than when I had a job.
3. Superlative – three or more persons or things are being compared.
Examples: Of my three sisters, Dolly is the most generous.
She is the best sister in the world.

How are adjectives compared?

1. Most adjectives of one or two syllables form the comparative and superlative degrees by
adding er and est to the positive degree respectively.
Examples:
Positive Comparative Superlative
kind kinder kindest
humble humbler humblest

2. Adjectives of three or more syllables and some adjectives of two syllables form the
comparative by adding more or less, and the superlative degree by adding most or least to
the adjectives.
Exampes:
studious more studious most studious
intelligent more intelligent most intelligent

3. There are irregular forms of adjectives the comparative and superlative degrees of which
are formed differently.
Examples:
Little less least
Bad/ill worse worst
Good/well better best
Many/much more most
Late later last/latest

4. When the qualities of a person or object are equal or the same the expression
as+adjectives+as is used.
Examples:
My sister is as beautiful as my mother.
That speeding car is as fast as the train.
