or the biggest house?

3. Presentation

Today, we will be discussing about the degrees of adjectives in making

comparisons (positive, comparative, superlative).

An adjective is said to be in the positive degree when there is no comparison.

An adjective is said to be in the comparative degree when it is used to compare two
nouns/pronouns. An adjective is in superlative degree when it is used to compare
more than two nouns/pronouns. We use the article 'the' before the superlative degrees.

4. Discussion

Read the following comparisons:

1. The banana plant is tall.
2. The apple tree is taller than a banana plant.
3. The mango tree is the tallest among the three.
In sentence 2 (comparative degree), what is added to the word tall? In sentence 3 (superlative
degree), what is added to the word tall? We add -er (comparative degree) and -est (superlative
degree) to most one or two syllable words that end in consonants.
When the positive is a word of one syllable that ends in vowel + consonant, we double the
ending consonant and then, add -er (comparative degree) and -est (superlative degree).

Look at the three boys. Read the sentences below.

1. Paulo is a brave boy.

2. Andrew is braver than Paulo.
3. Ethan is the bravest of the three boys.

In sentence 2 (comparative degree), what is added to the word brave? In sentence 3

(superlative degree), what is added to the word brave?
When the positive degree ends in -e, we add only -r (comparative degree) and -st (superlative
degree) to the adjective.

Let us compare these three girls. Read the sentences.

1. Cleo is happy.
2. Kris is happier than Cleo.
3. Mhariz is the happiest among the three girls.

In sentence 2 (comparative degree), what is added to the word happy? In sentence 3

(superlative degree), what is added to the word happy?
When the positive degree ends in consonant + y, we drop the -y and add -ier (comparative
degree) and -iest (superlative degree).
Compare these three luxury cars. Read the sentences below.

1. Bike is an expensive two-wheeled vehicle.

2. Motorcycle is more expensive than bike.
3. Big bike is the most expensive two-wheeled vehicle in the world.

In sentence 2 (comparative degree), what is added to the word before expensive? In sentence 3
(superlative degree), what is added to the word before expensive?
When the positive degree is a word of two or more syllables, we add more (comparative
degree) and most (superlative degree) before the adjective to form a comparative and superlative
degrees.
