We call these adjectives comparative and superlative adjectives.

When we compare two things we use comparative adjectives.


When we compare three or more things we use superlative adjectives.
Adding -er and -est

What do you notice about these words?

When we are using comparative and superlative adjectives, we


often use the suffixes er and est.
What is a Comparative Adjective?
A comparative adjective is used to compare one person, action, thing or state to
another. It adds the suffix -er to the original adjective.

e.g. brighter

‘bright’ is the original adjective. ‘-er’ is the suffix.

It is comparing two things only.


E.g. Sam’s torch is brighter than John’s torch.
What Is a Superlative Adjective?
A superlative adjective is used to compare one person, action, thing or state to
all others in the same group. It adds the suffix - est to the original adjective.

e.g. quietest

‘quiet’ is the original adjective. ‘-est’ is the suffix.

It is comparing more than two things.


E.g. Aisha is the quietest in the class.
Complete the sentences by adding either ‘-er’ or
‘-est’ to the adjectives.

Remember the rules

If the adjective ends


When the word ends in a -y, we need to
in an -e, we knock change it to an i,
the -e off before then add -er or -est.

When an adjective ends in the letter ‘e’, drop the ‘e’ before

When an adjective ends in ‘y’, drop the ‘y’ and add an ‘i’
before adding the suffix.

4. I’m __________ when I’m at home. happy

5. That man’s voice is ______ than mine. raspy


Remember that for some words we double the end
consonant before adding the suffix.
