a. Use the degrees of adjectives in making comparisons (positive, comparative,
superlative)

Our lesson today is all about degrees of
comparison
Adjective describes a noun and a pronoun.
What is the meaning of adjective again?

Adjective has three comparison
 Positive Degree
 Comparative Degree
 Superlative Degree
Positive Degree
It talks about one thing and it’s not compare with
another.
Or it simply describe a noun.
Example: The coffee is hot.
Comparative Degree
Compare two nouns to show which has a lesser or
greater degree. We always use the word “than”
after the adjective.
Example: Fire is hotter than the coffee
As we can see than is place after the adjective
There are rules in forming the comparative degree
of adjectives.
 Adding-er to 1-syllable
Exmaple: tall-taller
Big-bigger
Long-longer
Cute-cuter
 Changing y to I and adding er for
adjectives ending in y
Example:
Lovely-lovelier
Pretty-pretier

 Adding the word “more” before an
adjective

Superlative Degree
This compares more than two nouns to show
which has the greatest or to show the least degree.
We always use the word “the” before the
adjective
Example: The sun is the hottest among them.
There are also rules in forming the superlative
degree of adjectives
 Adding-est to 1 syllable adjectives
Example:
Tall-tallest; dark-darkest
Big-biggest: low-lowest
Cute –cutest; soft-softest
 Changing y to I and adding est for
adjectives ending in y
Lovely-loveliest
Pretty-pretiest
Funny-funniest
Happy-happiest
 Adding the word “most” before an
adjective
Example :
Beautiful-most beautiful

There are also irregular adjectives which


do not follow any of the given rules.
