LEARNING ACTIVITY WORKSHEETS #1

ENGLISH 9

Name_______________________________ Date____________ Score____________

Learning Objectives:

1. Relate text content read to particular social issues, concerns, or dispositions

in real life
2. Make connection with given insights to particular social issues, concerns, or
dispositions in real life situations

Learning Inputs:

Relevance is the perception that something has value and worth knowing. In a
manner like, relevance has something to do with how literature is relevant to real-life
situations. There are two ways on how to know the relevance in literary piece:
1. Utility value answers the question, “What am I going to use this for?”
2. Relatedness answers the questions, “What does this have to do with me?”
and “What does this have to do with the present?”
3. Soundness is the worth of having a compelling reason or satisfying a good
judgment. Literary works have differing soundness depending on the mood
and author’s reasoning. Author’s statement is developed by claim (point or
stand), reason, and evidence.

Directions: Study the paragraph below and answer the following questions.

Studies show that children who are on social media sites show signs of
behavioral problems. Children who are on Facebook happen to be more narcissistic,
antisocial, and aggressive than those not on the site. These websites are also known
to affect their social skills as most kids would rather text or Instant Message than have
a face-to-face conversation. Baroness Susan Greenfields, an Oxford neuroscientist
said, “Kids are detracted from learning to communicate in the real world. There are
reports from teachers that social networking is affecting kids’ comprehension levels.
Also, if kids communicate primarily through the screen, they do not learn the subtleties
of real-life communication -- such as body language, tone of voice…”. There are many
reasons as to why social media websites have age restrictions and if this is how it
mentally affects children then I personally feel they should be enforced.
Persuasive Essay – Ellen McEleney

1. How relevant is this paragraph in todays’ situations?

2. What are the author’s claims to prove a point?
3. How did the author present the problem?
Learning Opportunity 2
Directions: Read the paragraph and answer the questions below.

"A dog is man's best friend." That common saying may contain some truth, but
dogs are not the only animal friend whose companionship people enjoy. For many
people, a cat is their best friend. Despite what dog lovers may believe, cats make
excellent house pets as they are good companions, they are civilized members of the
household, and they are easy to care for.
In the first place, people enjoy the companionship of cats. Many cats are
affectionate. They will snuggle up and ask to be petted or scratched under the chin.
Who can resist a purring cat? If they're not feeling affectionate, cats are generally quite
playful. They love to chase balls and feathers, or just about anything dangling from a
string. They especially enjoy playing when their owners are participating in the
game. Contrary to popular opinion, cats can be trained. Using rewards and
punishments, just like with a dog, a cat can be trained to avoid unwanted behavior or
perform tricks. Cats will even fetch!

factual statement which refers to measurable effects which can be proved right or wrong.

Directions: Read the passage and answer the following questions.
Tony’s Place is crammed into a tiny building next to the Fine Arts Theater. The
owners offer a menu of Italian food. They’ve got the checkered tablecloths, dim lights,
and crusty bread. They also know how to make a hearty red sauce. Too bad they use it
to drown delicate fish. They also seem to lace everything with truckloads of garlic.
The service needs some work, too. Our waiter didn’t know what the specials were.
Nor did he think to refill our water glasses before we asked. With a combination of fake-
friendly chatter and outright nagging, he made us order, finish up, and clear out. He
seemed to see us only as automatic tip machines. The food and low prices bring the
customers in the door. The service should not push them out.

Despite historic progress on developing new tools to fight COVID-19 —

including nine vaccines listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) for emergency
use — inequitable access means the pandemic is actually worse today than it was a
year ago. Last December, I wrote about COVID-19’s confirmed global death toll of 1.5
million. Just one year later, that number stands in excess of 5 million.
So far, the world has delivered 7 billion vaccines and counting, but they are
being distributed unequally. According to Our World in Data, more than eight times as
many boosters are administered globally every day than are primary doses in low-
income countries. It is a global injustice, and the most vulnerable people remain the
most at risk. Only 1 in 4 health care workers in Africa have been fully vaccinated
despite serving on the pandemic’s front lines, for example, according to WHO.

Coronavirus: 'The masks you throw away could end up killing a whale'

As the world battles the coronavirus pandemic, more and more protective
equipment is ending up in the sea. Globally we are using 129 billion face masks
and 65 billion plastic gloves every month, according to some estimates. And divers
and observers are spotting more of this discarded waste floating underwater,
causing problems for wildlife, and washing up on shorelines all over the world.
