Have you been into an argument about a certain issue? What did you do to be
able to prove your point? Were you able to respond to an opposing view? How? Why
do you argue with someone? Arguments are usually oral or spoken; however, it can
also be in formal writing through an essay. This is called an argumentative essay.
Read the example below.
On Social Media
By Myriam R. Dela Cruz
What do we do upon waking up in the morning and before sleeping at night?
Well, your answer is as correct as mine. We turn on our cellphone and visit our social
media page such as Facebook, Tweeter or Instagram. Indeed, social media has
completely possessed us that it has become a part of our daily lives. Or should I say
hourly life? It may have helped us especially in getting information; however, I believe
that too much of social media can have negative effects on us physically, emotionally,
and socially.

Too much social media lessens our physical activities. We spend most of our
time staring on the screen, chatting, commenting, reacting and even stalking people.
We need to exercise. There are lots of outdoor and indoor activities which we can do
like jogging, Zumba dancing, stationary biking, gardening and even doing household
chores. These are enough to make us perspire and enjoy the fresh air.

Social media can also bring embarrassment to us. We can be a victim of

cyberbullying by those keyboard warriors who find enjoyment in bashing other
people’s post. Whatever harsh words written in the comment box is public and is
seen by netizens around the world. There’s no way we can delete the shame brought
to us. The harsh words can be deleted but the emotional stress remains.
Some people may disagree with me because they think that social media helps
us to connect with people especially during this pandemic. On the contrary, social
media sets family apart! Why? Family rapport is affected because each member finds
more enjoyment in connecting with the outside circle rather than within their
household. Think of a scenario in which a family is seated in one table and yet each
one prefers to have virtual conversation instead of having intimate chit chat and
pleasantries among family members.

To summarize, life is better with less use of social media. We will be healthier
and fitter if we use our time in physical activities as we enjoy nature. We can have a
private and bash-free life if we moderately post our pictures and activities in any
social media platform. We can better enjoy our family if we spend intimate time with
them instead of the virtual experiences being replaced by technology. It is high time
that we lessen social media activities and use more of the basic way of
communication if needed.

1. What is the writer’s viewpoint about social media?

_____________________________________________________________________

2. How did she prove her viewpoint?

_____________________________________________________________________

3. What did the writer mention to rebutt or counter those who say that social
media helps connect with relatives and friends?
_____________________________________________________________________

4. What do you think is the purpose of the writer in her essay?

_____________________________________________________________________

5. Were you convinced by her arguments? __________________________

Why or why not?_________________________________ ________________________

The argumentative essay entitled “On Social Media” contains the typical
structure of an essay. It starts with an introduction which describes the topic. The
body contains well-structured paragraphs that present reasons and evidence to
support the author’s claim. The last paragraph contains concluding sentences that
provide the audience with a resolution.

⮚ In the introduction, a writer starts the paragraph with a hook to catch the
attention of the readers. It is followed by a short background information
about the topic and the thesis statement which summarizes the main point
of the essay.

a. Why do you think a question used as a hook can attract the reader’s
attention? _____________________________________________________________
b. Aside from asking a question, what are other examples of a hook or
attention-getting sentences? ____________________________________________
c. In an argumentative essay, what does the writer express in the thesis
statement? ____________________________________________________________

⮚ The body comprises three or more paragraphs that explain the reasons to
support the thesis. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence stating the
reason/claim and should be supported by evidence/s.

d. Aside from citing statistics, what other supporting details/evidences are

credible sources to back up a claim? ___________________________________

3

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
⮚ Included in the body of an argumentative essay is the author’s rebuttal in
which the writer addresses an opposing point of view to disprove it by
presenting his counter-arguments.

Ex: Some people may disagree with me because they think that social
media helps us to connect with relatives and friends especially during
this pandemic. On the contrary, social media sets family apart.

e. What other conjunctions, aside from on the contrary, can be used to

introduce a rebuttal or counter statement? ______________________________

⮚ For the conclusion, the writer restates the thesis statement and summarizes
the arguments given in the body of the essay. A call to action statement can
be a final statement which can leave an impact to the readers. This serves as
an appeal to the readers’ emotion and convince them.

f. Read again the last sentence of the conclusion (It is high time that we
lessen social media activities and use more of the basic way of
communication, if needed). How do you think will this statement affect
the readers? ___________________________________________________________

Activity 1. Writing an introduction

Write an argumentative essay introduction for the topic No Cellphone Policy
in School. Write your paragraph on a one whole sheet of paper. Read the example
below as your guide.

EXAMPLE:
Have you ever imagined coming to school wearing your Outfit of the Day
(OOTD)? It would have been cool displaying your fashion statement to your
classmates but sadly, the school guard did not allow you to enter the campus
because of NO UNIFORM, NO ENTRY POLICY. It may be frustrating on your part
but I believe that wearing of school uniform is budget-friendly for the parents
and effort-free for students as well.

✔ If you are done, evaluate your work by following the instructions in the box.

● Put a check (/) on the space if you…

● started the paragraph with a hook. ________
● gave background information about the topic. ________
● wrote a thesis statement stating your stand about the topic. ________

✔ For items you missed to do after doing the checklist in the box, you can still
improve your paragraph before submitting.

Activity 2. Writing the body of an essay
Compose the body of the essay using the same topic of No Cellphone Policy
in School. Answer the question you will find after the example and develop your
answer with at least two reasons supported by evidence. Read the example and use
it as your guide. Write your paragraphs on one whole sheet of paper.

EXAMPLE:
Why must students wear proper uniform?

First, wearing of uniform lessens the parents’ expenses in buying clothes for
their children. Students will be wearing uniform every day and two to three sets
will be enough for the entire week. However, without a uniform, students should
have more clothes to avoid wearing the same clothes very often. Thus, it will
mean a financial burden for parents.
Secondly, students will not be stressed in choosing what to wear for the
day. They don’t need to spend a great amount of time and effort to decide what
to mix and match from their wardrobe. Therefore, preparation prior to going to
school is less tasking and time consuming.

QUESTION: Why should cellphones be banned in schools?

✔ If you are done, evaluate your work by following the instructions in the box.

Put a LIKE react on the space if you have…

-given logical reasons to prove the claim __________
-sufficiently backed up the claim with evidence __________
-given evidences that on any of the following: examples, statistics,
personal observation/experience, records/documents, etc. __________

✔ For items you missed to do after doing the checklist in the box, you can still
improve your paragraph before submitting.

Activity 2.1: Writing a rebuttal for an opposing view.

Compose a counter argument to oppose a viewpoint by completing the
sentence below. Read the example to serve as your guide. Write your paragraph on
a one whole sheet of paper.
EXAMPLE
Some students don’t like wearing school uniform because they are restricted to
express their fashion sense yet, I believe that being in school is not the right place to
show off a student’s fashion statement. Instead, they should be modest in their
appearance so as their concentration will not be diverted from the classroom tasks.
Besides, there is a time to dress up and that is on the weekend during mall time or
stroll time with their families and friends.

a cellphone is needed for research purposes; however, I believe that allowing the use
of cellphones inside the school can…_____________________________________________.

✔ If you are done, evaluate your work by following the instructions in the box.

● Put a WOW emoji if you have…

● disproved an opposing view by giving a reasonable rebuttal _________
● supported your rebuttal with details _________

✔ For items you missed to do after doing the checklist in the box, you can still
improve your paragraph before submitting.

Activity 3. Writing a Conclusion

Construct two to three sentences to conclude the essay about no cellphone
policy in school. Remember that a conclusion is a restatement or summary of the
introduction and should be ended with a call to action statement. Read the
example to serve as your guide. Write your paragraph on a one whole sheet of paper.

EXAMPLE

To conclude, the school uniform policy has more advantages because it helps
both parents and students to lessen the money spent on buying clothes as well as the
effort and time to prepare before going to school. Aside from earning knowledge and
skills, education is the time to be practical, economical and compliant. The policy of
wearing proper uniform before entering the school is a good training for students to
acquire these virtues. In the meantime, students must enjoy wearing their uniform
while they are in their best shape and capture themselves with a lot selfies and
groupies for photo op. Surely, time will come that these pictures will just be part of
their memories. #highschoollife
