WHO WE ARE

We use nature and animals as a way of helping vulnerable children

and adults develop their self-worth, life-skills, their sense of
empowerment and hope to build a better future

OUR COMMUNITY
Diepsloot is a poorly resourced community on the outskirts of Johannesburg with a high
incidence of violent crime and gender-based violence including domestic violence,
sexual violence and child abuse.

With a population size guessed to be between 350 000 – 500 000, the community is
expansive and brimming with life but also growing social problems. Contributing factors
include poverty, high rates of unemployment, racial tensions, and substance abuse.

A lack of access to basic services such as water, electricity, refuse collection, and
education perpetuates tensions. Furthermore, within the Diepsloot community there is
limited access to mental health care as a response to the violence, trauma, and struggles
of daily life.

Shumbashaba empowers people to recognize opportunities, to discover their ability to

choose different outcomes for themselves that embrace their strengths and unique skills
so they can build a future for themselves that is meaningful and purposeful.

OUR CORE PRINCIPLES

Respect is essential to recognising the value (importance, worth) of self,
others, animals and the environment.

Hope is a guidepost to a meaningful and purposeful life. Without hope you

feel paralysed with despair and don’t believe the future can be better

Courage is important to do what it takes to make meaningful changes,

especially in the face of difficult situations. It is hard to pursue goals
different to those made by peers and other important people in your
community

Learning is the commitment to taking action towards becoming the best

version of yourself through achieving your fullest potential. If you don’t
develop your talents, strengths and gifts there will be a space in the world
that will remain empty until you fill it.
