CONTINUOUS INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
17EE413 – DESIGN OF ELECTRICAL MACHINES

PART - A
1) Enumerate the factors governing the choice of number of armature slots in
a D.C machine?
The factors governing the choice of number of slots are:
1. Slot pitch
2. Slot loading
3. Commutation
4. Flux pulsation
5. Suitability for winding

2) Explicit the advantages of large number of poles with respect to the cost and
weight of a dc machine?

The large number of poles results in reduction of the following:

1. Weight of armature core and yoke.
2. Cost of armature and field conductors
3. Overall length and diameter of the machine
4. Length of commutator
5. Distortion of field form under load condition.

3) What are the factors to be considered for estimating the length of air gap in
dc machine?
The factors to be considered for estimating the length of air gap are
armature reaction ,iron losses ,distortion of field form and noise.

4) Distinguish between lap and wave windings used in dc machine?

The lap and wave winding primarily differ from each other in the
following two factors:
1. The number of circuits between the positive and negative brushes,
i.e., number of parallel paths.
2. The manner in which the coil ends are connected to the commutator
segments.

5) Discuss the parameters governing the length of commutator.

1. Number of brushes
2. Commutator losses
3. Number of coils in armature
4. Voltage between adjacent commutator segments
5. Peripheral speed

6) Obtain the expression for maximum flux density in the airgap on load
condition.

7) Precise the need for CAD analysis of electrical machines.

The Computer Aided Design(CAD) make possible more trial designs
and enable sophisticated calculations.
1. It make it possible to select an optimized design with a reduction in
cost and improvement in performance.
2. It performs all simple arithmetic operations at a high speed and make
it possible to produce design in short time.
3. It reduces the probability of error with the result.Highly accurate and
reliable results are obtained.
8) Interpret the limitations of traditional design of electrical machines.

Limitations in Design : The materials used for the machine and others
such as cooling etc., imposes a limitation in design. The limitations stem from
saturation of iron, current density in
conductors ,temperature ,insulation ,mechanical properties ,efficiency ,power
factor etc.
1. It is not suitable for modern day designs as designs today are more
complex and sophisticated.
2. There is no reference source ,since no drawing is involved.
3. It cannot be implemented for large scale production.

9) What do you understand by synthesis method?

The process of synthesis is the exact opposite of Analysis. Here the
starting point is the desired performance and the computer is required to work
backward and determine the optimum machine designs. The process involves
the formation of suitable inverted performance equations which are
differential equations connecting the performance to various design
parameters like length, diameter etc., The design is also required to fed in the
boundary conditions or constraints of the equations. This method makes full
use of the logical abilities of the computer and theoretically the most desirable
method for design using computer.
