ENHANCING LITERACY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM WITH EMPHASIS ON THE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS (EDUC 10 ISKL1)

Daminar GRAPHIC ORGANIZER The type of organizer we use for this activity, is what we called as the “Spider Web Organizer or Semantic Map” which is one of the widely used graphic organizers in investigating and enumerating ideas or concepts related to the center idea (main idea). The concept is like a spider web, it has 2 parts – the spider and the web, the spider is at the center which represents the main idea, main topic or main concept, and the extenders or branches which we also called as the “Web” are the branching ideas of the main topic which may give description, discussion or further understanding to the main topic.
In this activity, the main topic or concept is the Attributes of the 21 st
Century Teaching and Learning, which describes the different characteristics of teaching and learning process in the 21 st Century Classrooms inside the 21st Century Curriculum. According to our further research, there are 8 Critical Attributes of the 21st Century Teaching and Learning, these are the (1)integrated and interdisciplinary, (2) technologies and multimedia, (3) global classroom, (4)creating/adapting to constant personal and social changes and lifelong learning, (5) student centered, (6) 21st century skills, (7) project based and research driven, and (8)relevant, rigorous and real world. Integrated and interdisciplinary is described as the interrelatedness of information across different areas in the integrated manner, what this means is that students will be able to link their knowledge in different areas into one for a much more effective learning. Technologies and multimedia is described as the full use of available ICT (Information and Communication Technology) tools as well as other media platforms to improve teaching and learning, digital literacy is the ability to utilize and create information with the help of ICT tools. Global classroom is the product of globalization, an international exchange of knowledge, cultures, science and technology across the world. Global classroom means allowing the student to become global citizens and globally competent by exposing them to different cultures, traditions, challenges and problems. The ability to creating/adapting to constant personal and social changes and lifelong learning is another attribute which implies that learning takes place anywhere, anytime at any age, and that the ability to adapt to changes means another opportunity for learning and growth. Another attribute of the 21st century teaching and learning is that it is student centered, which implies that students learns on their own by allowing them to experience the real world around them, allowing them to acquire different skills which includes the 21st century skills, which are set of basics skills like reading, writing, numeracy, critical and creative thinking skills, problem-solving and decision making skills, and ICT literacy and skills that would help them cope with life and work in 21 st Century communities. Lastly, the 21st century learning and teaching is a project-based and research-driven and relevant, rigorous and real-world, which allows the student to continually learn by updating their knowledge through research, finding solutions to common societal problems through real world exposure which activates their activates their natural curiosity ang eagerness to learn.
These attributes describes the beauty of the 21 st Century Curriculum
and its much more advance, timely, effective and interesting way of teaching and learning than its previous versions.
