hello, everyone. welcome to this short presentation. my name is isam. come here.
i'm a post doctor research associate at the university of illinois, urbana
champagne.and eventually sent the full transportation uh. today, i'm gonna be giving you a very short presentation, maybe ten to fifteen minutes about accelerated payment testing. i call it an accelerated payment testing and introduction because i'm just going to touch basis.some of the introductory uh topics related to uh accelerated payment ah testing.uh, first, i thought that i would start this presentation with description about the payment evaluation techniques that are out there and what governs uh which techniques uh.use. so obviously, there are many, many uh techniques to evaluate a pavement that starts from a computer simulation or lab testing field testing.uh building a test section on a test road on doing a payment performance study for long term, as well as accelerated payment testing, so what governs uh, which method we go for is actually. uh, what amount of not.knowledge we want to achieve from the experiments versus the cost of that experiment, so these are the two determining factors, and as you see, when we talk about computer simulations or some engineering judgment. usually the cost is very low and the achievable knowledge is a kind of a variable. you can be at the low side or the high side. depending on how accurate to you.or for example. if we talk about the computational assimilation. how many variables do you include.as well as uh, what is your uh computational power and time that you're willing to wait, you can have very accurate and very low low accuracy uh models if you see accurate payment testing, which we're gonna talk about in details.in this um presentation, the cost is usually not low. we're talking about medium to high cost uh compared to the other type of material evaluation uh for payments.but the ever level of knowledge that is usually achieved is also uh quite good. we achieve medium to high ah knowledge about the materials we're using and about the payment performance, and have this structure will.uh hopefully perform in the field when it is uh constructed as a full scale uh uh road and.have some real or actual loads apply to it.so with that. what is accelerated payment testing when we talk about accurate payment testing, we're talking about a testing of a pavement that is done in a very short period of.usually uh between several days and a few months, uh maximum is the amount of time that the payment is tested. uh, the idea is that we test the pavement under control uh loading of the payments, and we actually the failure.by increasing the frequency of passes, so maybe we have just one wheel that goes back and forth back and forth all the time and does thousands of passes per day. for example, uh, also many predicting the road level, so we know that the truck load is nine kit. for example, but when you do anything.certain payment testing we might uh decide to go to higher uh loads.on the payment. just to have an isolated value of the payment, also the payment can be accelerated by a prototype design. so i let's say i wanna go to the field and build four inches or hundred millimeter of.nature made payment um for that material uh. in particular, if i'm doing extracted payment testing, i might do have the thickness so that i can feel faster, but i can. for example, use that to decide or compare two test sections side by side and see which one for.uh, better, the other thing that the payment can be accelerated by is the environmental factors, so i might decide to submerge the test section and uh test the materials in a very wet condition.um, uh, if it's an h m a uh hot mix asphalt throat uh, we might go to high temperatures where the h m a. uh more viscous uh actually and uh it it deforms more. so these are the factors that can be changed and manipulated in an accelerated payment testing to achieve an accelerated.in a few number of uh days or a few months uh for the payment. so what are the pros and cons uh for doing accelerated payment testing the pros is that it's a full scale payment testing. so if we compare a lab experiment where you have a small sample.there's a few test section that is actually being uh tested. then uh, the pros that you're doing a full scale test. the other advantage is the use of institute materials and construction equipment, so we actually.using the materials that we want to test, we're using the full loads for compaction and construction, etc, which uh better simulates what can be constructed out there in the future. also, a big advantage is that it enhances understanding of material uh behavior because it's a full scale section. and also it's more controlled type experiment. so you can post the testing you can.uh, have instrumentation. you can do all these things that uh maybe are harder if you build a reroute and expose that road to a real uh traffic.and one more advantage that is also important is that it is relatively uh fastest in a few months. i have results. i can build the roads and expect the performance.and it's usually reliable because, um.it is a full scale testing at the end, what are the disadvantages or the cons cost is one of them. we are building grill um roads, so that's a cost in the construction.we're using a multi million dollar uh equipment, usually to test uh these the exerted payment testing equipment are usually very expensive, not just the cost, also the maintenance cost like we're talking about.thousands or tens of thousands of dollars per month uh of uh use that you need to uh spend on maintenance um, that's one of the biggest disadvantages and also availability of this equipment.place or not. every lab, for example, we have an isolated badminton testing equipment uh to use, so it's a privilege if you have one, so cost and uh and limited amount of uh equipment availability.uh is uh one of the biggest disadvantage. another thing is the limited ageing effect. for example, if we're talking about asphalt payments where aging is important and critical to the performance and now we're just jamming the test, and we need.quickly, in a few uh days or months, then we don't see the long term aging effects in that ah, payment.another thing is limited environmental simulation, so maybe you you're doing your test in um the months of four. so you just get that whether you don't get the exposure to different weather conditions.of the different seasons in the year, for example, and and such uh uh properties also maybe if your facility is inside or indoor and you don't have uh real uh weather conditions outside, you don't get the rain, you don't get the.available in most conditions in your payment players, so that's one of the descent messages. one thing is also is that it does not necessarily simulate real traffic, and that's a big thing uh for people that do accelerated payment testing.they tell you a p t is not l t p p, so accelerated payment testing is not long term. pavement performance is just a quick test with maybe fixtures or.different load levels that we use to understand how the payment is actually performing, so it does not curse. simulate the real traffic that is gonna be up there applied.payment once is constructed as a reroute uh in the future.
