II. Project Rationale


As a multilingual state, the Philippines has grappled with the political aspects of
determining which languages ought to serve in official functions in a vastly dispersed archipelago.
From a policy perspective, recent initiatives—such as the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual
Education (MTB– MLE)—have served to assert the importance of regional languages not only as a
symbol of linguistic plurality within the country, but also as being of intrinsic academic value. This
scenario can be observed in English classrooms. Translanguaging typically emerges in this
type of classroom setting.
With the present implementation of Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education
(MTB-MLE) in the Philippines, this colloquium on Translanguaging in a Pluridimensional
Language Policy in the Philippine Classroom Setting is conducted to explore on-site and
on-line translanguaging practices in multi-level (i.e. secondary and tertiary school levels)
educational contexts by individuals from multilingual and multicultural (e.g.
Tagalog,Waray, Cebuano-Visayan, etc.) backgrounds learning various subjects (e.g. Math,
Science and English as a Second Language) under diverse curricula with language playing
different roles.
Hence, this proposed colloquium not only provides data-driven evidence for
elucidating the theories and hypotheses about translanguaging, but also offers theoretical,
methodological, and pedagogical references for future translanguaging studies.

III. Project Objectives


This colloquium is worthy of attention in the following aspects:
a. To provide innovative ways of promoting language learning, engagement, and
relationship-building with bi-/multilingual students.

b. To immerse in the theory, learning about reconceptualizations of bi-/multilingualism not


as subtractive or even additive, but as dynamic.

c. To explore the use of linguistic repertoires to learn, how bi/multilingual learners use
their voices and languages in multilanguaging behaviours and practices.

d. To bring together scholars working on the most intriguing aspects of language research,
including but not limited to multilingualism, language policy, language practices,
translanguaging.
