The saddle at the lowest section must resist the horizontal force (F). The effective cross section of the saddle to resist this load is
one third of the vessel radius (R).
The average stress shall not exceed two-thirds of the compression yield point of the material.

Material = SA 283 Gr. C

D = outside diameter of vessel = 60.00 in ( 1524.00 mm )

W = weight of vessel = 20,000 lb ( 9070.295 kg )
n = number of saddles = 2 pcs
Q = load on one saddle = 10,000 lb ( 4535.147 kg )
Smys = minimum yield strength = 30,000 psi
S = maximum allowable stress of saddle material = 20,000 psi
tw = web plate thickness = 0.25 in ( 6.35 mm )
f = contact angle = 120.0 degree
K = factor from table page 98 = 0.204
Pressure Vessel Handbook
Aeff = effective area of web plate
= R / 3 * tw = 2.500 in2 ( 1,613 mm2 )
F = horizontal force
= K*Q = 2040.00 lb
F / Aeff = horizontal force per effective area = 816 psi
Yield point = 30,000 psi ( ASME BPV Part IIA)
Allowable Stress = 20,000 psi
Since (F / Aeff) < Allowable Stress, then the thickness of the web plate is satisfactory to resist horizontal force!

Check the stress in vessel supported by the saddles :

Check Longitudinal bending stress :
A = distance from seam line of shell to = 3.90 in ( 99.00 mm )
the center of saddle
b = width of saddle = 7.87 in ( 200 mm )
H = depth of head (flange) = 15.00 in ( 381.00 mm )
L = length of vessel = 236.22 in ( 6000.00 mm )
P = total design pressure = 650.00 psig
R = outside radius of vessel = 30.00 in ( 762 mm )
ts = thickness of shell = 0.750 in ( 19.05 mm )
K1 = factor from table page 90 = 0.335
Pressure Vessel Handbook
E = joint efficiency = 0.85

Stress at the saddles :

C1 = A/L = 0.02
C2 = (R2-H2) / 2 / A / L = 0.37
C3 = 4H/3/L = 0.08
C4 = K1 R2 ts = 226.13 in3
S1 = Q A (1 - (1-C1+C2)/(1+C3)) / C4 = -42.18 psi

Stress at midspan :
C5 = 2 (R2-H2) / L2 = 0.024
C6 = p R2 ts = 2120.58 in3
S1 = Q L ((1+C5)/(1+C3) - 4 C1) / 4 / C6 = 244.58 psi

Stress due to internal pressure =

Sp = P R / 2 / ts = 13,000.00 psi

The sum of tensional stress = 13,244.58 psi

The stress value of the girth seam = E*S = 17,000.00 psi

Satisfactory, since the tensional stress does not exceed the stress value of the girth seam!

Check : ts / R = 0.025
Since ts / R > 0.005 then compression stress is not factor

Check Tangential shear stress :

A =< ( R / 2)
K2 = factor from table page 90 = 1.171
Pressure Vessel Handbook
In shell :
S2 = K2 Q / R / ts * (( L - 2A ) / ( L+ 4/3 H )) = 463.99 psi
Check :
S2 < 0.8 S
Satisfactory, since S2 does not exceed (0.8 times the stress value of shell material).

Check Circumferential stress :

Compression yield point of shell material = 65,000 psi
L < (8R)
K7 = = 0.76
A/R = = 0.13
From the chart :
K6 = = 0.05

Stress at the horn of saddle :

C7 = ( R ts )1/2 = 4.74 in
C8 = 4 ts ( b+1.56 C7) = 45.82 in2
C9 = 3 K6 Q / 2 / ts2 = 1413.33 psi
S4 = -Q / C8 - C9 = -1631.57 psi

Check :
S4 < 1.5 Sv
Satisfactory, since S4 does not exceed (1.5 times the stress value of shell material).

Stress at the bottom of shell

S5 = - K7 Q / (C8 / 4) = -663.4 psi
Check :
S5 < 0.5 times the compression yield point of shell
Satisfactory, since S5 does not exceed (0.5 times the compression yield point).
