Review the links below from two different universities located in different parts of the county.

● Rowan University – New Jersey

● Miami Dade College - Florida

Notice anything different? Discuss the essential characteristics that should be included in an
emergency plan/webpage and contrast the unique components of these two universities and
provide your reasoning as to why they focus on those specific risks. Provide examples from your
own work experience or location of the country (snow storms, flood areas, etc.). Does your
organization have agreements with local contractors to aid in the event of an emergency? If you
have no previous experience in facility emergency management, research articles that cover this
topic. Provide the references in the discussion posts, if the article was found on a webpage
provide the web address.

There are many different essential characteristics that should be included in an emergency plan
or webpage. These should include but are not limited to:
1. Mission
a. Clear statement of the emergency plan objective
2. Resources
a. Inhouse (people or equipment) or exterior (contractor) resources that are used
in the time of an emergency
3. Evacuation procedures
a. Escape routes, floor plans, necessary equipment location
4. Mitigation methods
a. Ways the company can prevent an emergency or prevent the chance of an
emergency from occurring
5. Emergency Practice/training
a. Fire drills or any sort of random test to give employees or students a preview
of what an emergency would look like, so they know how to react in that sort
of situation
b. Provide employees/students with training to teach them the basics and have
intermittent learning check quizzes

Rowan University focuses on transforming lives through education, research, and public service
when impacted by a major emergency or disaster. They accomplish this through programs and
projects in emergency and disaster planning, training, mitigation, response, and recovery. Their
emergency response department is capable to respond to emergencies including a hazardous
materials incident, a weather event, or an armed assailant. Their primary priorities are protecting
human life, supporting health, safety, and basic care services, protecting university assets,
maintaining university services, assessing damages, and restoring campus operations. Rowan
focuses on these specific risks because as a university they are required to protect their
students/faculty, upkeep all their services so no one gets harmed, make sure damages are fixed so
everyone can resume normal operations. It is the universities job to protect their campus and
ensure a safe environment for all. Miami Dade College is located in Florida where most campus
days run smoothly with no interruptions but sometimes there are emergencies that require
campus evacuation. The unique characteristics of their emergency/evacuation plan include using
only the stairs, stay in groups, don’t leave campus unless instructed, do not re-enter until an
announcement is made, and people needing assistance during an evacuation must go to
designated areas of refuge for protection in each building to wait for assistance from Public
Safety or emergency responders. Miami Dade College focuses on these specific risks because
since they live in an area where weather doesn’t really affect them, their major concerns seem to
only be evacuation of the campus for reasons such as campus fires, bomb threats, or unknown
persons on campus.

I haven’t been at my current job for too long, but an example of an evacuation/emergency plan
was a fire drill in all of the Moorestown Lockheed sites last month where everyone had to
evacuate the buildings. In my particular building, there were specific doors and stairwells that
quickly flowed out all the employees without overcrowding and waiting. Security directed
everyone to their designated areas and checked to make sure the buildings were clear before
allowing everyone to reenter. The location of my work is heavily affected by weather especially
this year. Rain fall has been super heaving causing flooding and power outages. I wouldn’t be
surprised if this winter huge snowstorms call for emergency plans or shutting down Lockheed
plants and campuses.

Lockheed has agreements with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. Under the EPA contract, Lockheed provides 24-hour support during
environmental emergencies, quickly assessing the situation, making suggestions for containment,
and assisting with remediation activities. These emergencies include national and international
incidents involving releases of oil and hazardous materials and uncontrolled hazardous waste
sites. Lockheed’s vice president of health and life sciences said, "Lockheed Martin has been a
longtime CDC partner supporting multiple requirements; we take a mission-focused approach to
design and implement tailored IT and operational solutions that help protect our citizens."
Lockheed has provided support to ensure public health emergency and response efforts
efficiently.
