Kseniya Malashka and Savannah Wheeler
combined to score 45 of Middle Tennessee’s 76
points as the Lady Raiders handled UAB, 76-45.
With the win, the Lady Raiders (14-2, 7-0
C-USA) extended their winning streak to 12
games, which ties for the longest streak by the
program since Dec. 27, 2013 to Feb. 10, 2014.
Middle Tennessee trailed briefly in the first quarter
but a 12-3 end to the frame gave the Lady Raiders
a 16-9 lead. UAB’s (9-8, 1-7 C-USA) scoring in the
first quarter came on three 3-pointers. Wheeler
caught fire in the second quarter with eight points,
including shooting 3-of-4 from the field to help
MTSU extend its lead to 18 (38-20) at halftime.
As UAB cut the lead to single digits (41-32) at the
6:16 mark in the third, Wheeler continued to hit
shots, Malashka found her groove in the second half.
The redshirt senior forward scored nine points in
the third quarter and 12 of MTSU’s 17 points in the
final period to finalize her season-high 26 points.
The Lady Raiders forced 19 turnovers while
committing just eight themselves. MTSU scored 29
points off turnovers compared to UAB’s seven. The
Lady Raiders won the battle on the boards 42-34.
Spark Off the Bench
• Kseniya Malashka has been a force on both sides
of the court this season for the Lady Raiders. The
redshirt senior has been arguably the best sixth
woman in the country, averaging 16.9 points per
game, shooting 47.6 percent from the field and
posting a conference-leading 1.8 blocks per game.
• A forward from Belarus, Malashka’s dynamic play
includes nine games with 18-plus points, six games in
double figure scoring and at least seven rebounds, 10
games with multiple blocks and one double-double.
Wheels Up
• Middle Tennessee junior guard Savannah Wheeler
has been named to the Midseason Watchlist for the
2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year
Award, presented by Her Hoop Stats, Wednesday.
One of 15 student-athletes on the list representing
14 schools and 11 conferences, Wheeler’s presence
as the Lady Raider point guard this season has
been instrumental to the team’s 14-2 start (7-0
in C-USA) and current 12-game winning streak.
Wheeler is averaging 15.5 points, 2.9
rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
A preseason All-Conference selection,
Wheeler leads Conference USA and ranks 20th
nationally with a 89.6 free throw percentage.
The 10 semifinalists will be announced in February,
with five finalists being announced in early March.
The winner will be announced in late March.
The list is fluid and players may play their way
on or off the list over the course of the season.
Hammon was a three-time All-American during her
career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the
Sweet 16 in 1999, the program’s only appearance
to date. She was signed by the New York Liberty
in 1999 and traded to the San Antonio Stars in
2007, where she played the rest of her career.
Hammon retired in 2014 as a six-time All-Star
and a two-time All-WNBA First Team honoree. In
2016 she was named one of the top 20 players in
WNBA history and was recently named to the W25.
Hammon became the second female coach in NBA
history when she began coaching for the San Antonio
Spurs in 2014. Additionally, Hammon is the only
woman to be a head coach in the NBA Summer
League as well as the only woman to be a member of
an NBA All-Star coaching staff. Currently, Hammon
is the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces and won
the 2022 WNBA Championship in her first season.
Her Hoops Stats was founded in 2017 to unlock better
insight about women’s basketball at all levels. It began as
a statistics site focused on providing consistent, reliable,
and easy-to-access data about women’s basketball
for both mobile and desktop environments. Her Hoop
Stats has expanded to become a leading independent
voice in the women’s game providing content through
its newsletter, podcast and social media accounts.
Milestone Watch
Savannah Wheeler is four points away from
1,500 career points while Kseniya Malashka
is six points away from 1,000 career points.
Wheeler is in her first season with the Lady
Raiders after spending the previous three
seasons at Marshall while Malashka is in her
second season after a three-year stint at VCU.
Don’t Let Her Get Hot
• Including Jan. 7’s 24-point performance at North
Texas, Jalynn Gregory has made four-or-more
threes in three of her last five games and five times
overall this season. The sophomore out of Lafayette,
Tenn., is averaging 17.4 points since New Year’s Eve.
• Gregory leads all of C-USA in 3-point field goals per
game (2.7) while ranking second in 3-point field goal
percentage (35.1 percent) and third in free throw
percentage (86.3 percent) and minutes per game (34.2).
Establishing a Presence Inside
• Anastasiia Boldyreva is starting
to find her rhythm inside the paint.
• She nearly finished with a double-double vs. UTSA
after pulling down nine rebounds while also adding
four blocks. Boldyreva was an efficient 8-for-9 from
the field while recording two blocks and four rebounds
at North Texas. Boldyreva scored a season-high 21
points vs. Rice with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Calling a Cab
• Starting in eight of the last 11 games, Courtney
Blakely’s impact is not going unnoticed. A sophomore
out of Gary, Ind., Blakely has filled in the starting spots
for Alexis Whittington and Savannah Wheeler while
the two have been sidelined due to injury this season.
• Blakely almost finished with a triple-double vs. UTSA
Jan. 5 after an 11-point, 11-assist, eight-rebound game.
Coming off the bench against Rice Jan. 11, Blakely
scored 15 points and brought down eight rebounds.

Third Quarter’s The Charm
The 33 points scored by the Lady Raiders in the third
quarter of Wednesday’s 85-56 win over Rice were the
most points scored in a quarter in program history. It’s the
most points MTSU has scored in a quarter since dropping
37 in the first quarter against Troy on Dec. 17, 2020.

Statement Win
• Middle Tennessee’s 67-49 win over then-No. 18 Louisville
was the first Lady Raider win vs. a ranked opponent since
2011, the 11th win over a ranked team in program history,
the fourth win over a ranked team in the Rick Insell era
and the sixth ranked win inside the Murphy Center.
• In addition, the win was the largest ranked
win by the Lady Raiders in program history while
Middle Tennessee is the only Conference USA
school to beat a ranked opponent this season.
Plenty of Cushion
• Middle Tennessee leads all of Conference USA and
ranks 21st in the nation with a 19.6 scoring margin.
In their 14 wins, the Lady Raiders are averaging a 22.8
point differential, including a 52-point stomping of
Southern Illinois Nov. 12. The win margin in Carbondale
was tied for the eighth largest in Lady Raider history.
• The Dec. 1 win over Tennessee Tech was the largest
win over the Golden Eagles in the all-time series
between the two programs, which dates back to 1976.
• The 18-point win vs. Louisville was MTSU’s largest
win over a ranked opponent in program history.
STUDENT-athletes
• Head Coach Rick Insell and his staff have always put a
strong emphasis on success in the classroom. The Lady
Raiders finished the fall semester with a 3.7 team GPA.
Kseniya Malashka was the lone student-athlete to
graduate at the conclusion of the fall semester. Malashka
graduated with a degree in business administration.
• As Middle Tennessee faced Memphis on the day of
MTSU’s commencement, the program held a ceremony
of its own for Malashka Dec. 16 as teammates,
support staff, fans and university president Dr.
Sidney A. McPhee came together to celebrate.
Whittington Sets Program Record
With her 135 appearance Jan. 16 at UAB, Alexis
Whittington is now the program’s all-time leader in
games played. In her fifth season, the Murfreesboro,
Tenn., native has started 75 games. She enters
Thursday’s game with 789 career points 153
steals and 527 rebounds in 3,530 minutes played.

addition of back-to-back All-West Tennessee Player of
the Year and two-time Tennessee Miss Basketball finalist
Jada Harrison during the first day of the NCAA Early
Signing Period Wednesday.

“Jada fits our program to a T in the fact that she’s a team

player,” Insell said. “It’s not about her as much as it’s
about what she can do to make our program successful.
That’s one of the reasons we recruited her.”

Harrison, a dynamic guard out of Martin, Tenn., led

Westview High School to its first state championship
since 1996 last season as the tournament’s MVP.

A three-time TSWA All-State Selection, Harrison

averaged 16.2 points, eight rebounds, three assists
and two steals per game in 2021-22 and 17.1 points,
3.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and two steals per game as a
sophomore in 2020-21.

“Last year she was up for Miss Basketball and probably

will be up again,” Insell said. “She’s a big-time player that
chose us over several Power Five schools. We couldn’t
be more excited to add a high-caliber player with a
championship mentality to our program.”

Harrison received a nomination for a chance to play in

the McDonald’s All-American Game Jan. 11. She was one
of 722 girls and boys basketball players on the full list
released Jan. 11. Harrison is one of nine girls in the state
of Tennessee to be nominated.

Middle Tennessee Athletics celebrates 50 years of the Murphy Center in 2022, the home of Lady
Raider basketball. All season long, the Blue Raiders plan to reflect on 50 years of memories, honor
the iconic individuals, events and teams, and look ahead at what’s in store for the future.

In the nearly 50 years since the building opened, the “Glass House” has hosted the biggest concert
stars of the 70s and 80s, some of the best athletes to ever play the game of basketball, both from
the state of Tennessee and outside of it and created countless memories for Blue Raiders of all ages,
both in athletic competition and in celebration of life’s milestones at graduations and convocations.

Most notably for Blue Raider fans, the concourse of the Murphy Center will feature a colorful time-
line around the entirety of Jimmy Earle/Monte Hale Arena, depicting all the great concerts, athletic
events, graduations, and many other events that have made Murphy Center one of the defining
features of Murfreesboro for five decades.

his 17 seasons. Since his arrival to Middle Tennessee in 2005, the eight-time Hall of Famer has led
