Overview of ASME Section IX

Overview of ASME Section IX

Section IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code

relates to the qualification of welders, welding operators,
brazers and brazing operators and the procedures they
employ in welding and brazing in accordance to the ASME
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and the ASME 831 Code
for Pressure Piping
Overview of ASME Section IX

Section IX is referenced for qualification by

the construction Codes I, III, IV, VIII & XI

These construction Codes apply to specific

types of fabrication and may impose
additional welding requirements or
exemptions to Section IX qualifications
Section IX provides rules for the
writing and qualification of welding
procedure specifications and for the
qualification of welders and welding
operators who will use the welding
procedure specifications

The three documents covered by Section IX are:

Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)
Procedure Qualification Record (PQR)
Welders Performance Qualification (WPQ)

There are essentially no production

welding requirements within the scope
of ASME Section IX

Notes for Figures 3.3 and 3.4

a Not prequalified for GMAW-S nor GTAW.

b Joint shall be welded from one side only.
c Cyclic load application limits these joints to the horizontal welding position (see 2.17 .2).
ct Backgouge root to sound metal before welding second side.
e SMAW detailed joints may be used for prequalified GMAW (except GMAW-S) and FCAW.
1 Minimum weld size (E) as shown in Table 3.4. S as specified on drawings.

g If fillet welds are used in statically loaded structures to reinforce groove welds in corner and T-joints, these shall be equal to T1 /4, but
need not exceed 3/8 in. [10 mm]. Groove welds in corner and T-joints of cyclically loaded structures shall be reinforced with fillet welds
equal to T/4, but need not exceed 3/8 in. [1 Omm].
h Double-groove welds may have grooves of unequal depth, but the depth of the shallower groove shall be no less than one-fourth of the
thickness of the thinner part joined.
i Double-groove welds may have grooves of unequal depth, provided these conform to the limitations of Note 6. Also the weld size (E)
applies individually to each groove.
i The orientation of the two members in the joints may vary from 135° to 180° for butt joints, or 45° to 135° for corner joints, or 45° to 90°
for T-joints.
k For corner joints, the outside groove preparation may be in either or both members, provided the basic groove configuration is not
changed and adequate edge distance is maintained to support the welding operations without excessive edge melting.
1 Weld size (E) shall be based on joints welded flush.

rnFor flare-V-groove welds and flare-bevel-groove welds to rectangular tubular sections, r shall be as two times the wall thickness.
n For flare-V-groove welds to surfaces with different radii r, the smaller r shall be used .

General Note: Due to limited capacity of some tensile testing machines. lhe specimen dimensions for Annex M steels may be as agreed
upon by the Engineer and the Fabncator.
Notes:
1. It is desirable. ii possible. lo make the length or lhe grip section large enough to allow the specimen lo extend into the grips a distance
equal to two-thirds or more of the length ol the grips.
2 . The endsolthe reduced section shall not differ in width by more than 0 .004 in . [0 .102 mm] . Also. there may be a gradual decrease in
width from the ends to the center. but the width ol either end shall not be more than 0 .015 in. [0.381 mm] larger lhan the width at the
center.
3 . Narrower widths (W and C) may be used when necessary. In such cases. the width of the reduced section should be as large as the
width ol the material being tested allows. II the widlh of the material is less than W , the sides may be parallel throughout the length of
the specimen .
4 . For standard plate-type specimens. the ends olthe specimen shall be symmetrical with lhe centerline olthe reduced section within
1/4 in . [6 mm].
5 . The dimension t is the thickness ol the specimen as provided for in the applicable material specifications. The minimum nominal
thickness of 1-112 in . (38 mm) wide specimens shall be 3116 in . [5 mm] except as allowed by the product specification .
6 . For plates over 1-112 in. [38 mm] thick. specimens may be cut into approximately equal strips. Each strip shall be at least 314 in .
[20 mm] thick. The test results ol each strip shall meel lhe minimum requirements.

4.8.3.4 Reduced-Section Tension Specimens (sec
Figure 4.14). Before testing, the least width and corre-
sponding thickness of the reduced section shall be mc..1-
sured. The specimen shall be ruptured under tensile loaJ,
and the maximum load shall be determined. The cross-
sectional area shall be obtained by multiplying the \vidth
by the thickness. The tensile strength shall be obtained by
dividing the maximum load by the cross-sectional area.

4.8.3.5 Acceptance Criteria for Reduced-Section

Tension Test. The tcnsi le strength shall be no less than
the minimum of the specified tensile range or the base
metal used.

4.8.3.6 All-\Veld-1\'lctal Tension Specimen ( sec Fig-

4.8.5 Retest. If any one peci1nen of all those tested fails
to 111.eet the test requirements, t\vO retests for that particular
type of test specimen may be performed with specimens
cut from the same \VPS qualification material. The results
of both test specimens shall n1eet the test requirc1ncnts.
For material over l~l/2 in. [38 mrnJ thick, failure of a
, pl,Citncn shall require testing of alJ specimens of the same
type from two additional locations in the test material.

Requirements ~for CVN .Testing

4.33 General
4.33.1 The CVN test requirernents and test procedures in
this section shall apply only when specified in the con-
tract docu1nents in conforn1ance with 5.26.5(3)[d] and
4.1.1.3, and Table 3.1 of this code. While the require-
ments of this section do not address CVN testing of base
metals, it is assun1ed that the base metals are suitable for
applications where CVN testing of the WPS is required.

4.34 Test Locations
4.34.1 The test location for individual CVN test speci-
mens, unless otherwise specified on contract documents,
shall be as shown in Figure 4.40 and Table 4.14.

4.34.2 The positioning of the notch for all CVN test

specimens shall be done by first machining the speci-
mens from the test weld at the appropriate depth as
shown in Figure 4.40. The specimens should be made
slightly overlength to allow for exact positioning of the
notch. Next, the bars should be etched with a mild
etchant such as 5o/o nital, to reveal the location of the
weld fusion zone and HAZs. The centerline of the notch
shall then be located in the specimens, as shown in Fig-
ure 4.40.

173
Real Educational Services, Inc.
4.35 CVN Tests
4.35.1 There are two options for the nun1ber of CVN test
specimens to be taken from a single test location:
Option A-3 specimens
Option B-5 specimens

4.35.2 CVN test speci1nens shall be machined from the

same welded test assembly made to deten11ine other weld
joint properties (see Figure 4.7, 4.8, 4.10, or 4.11).
Where the size of the welded test assemblies is not suffi-
cient to satisfy all the mechanical testing specimen re-
quire1nents, an additional welded test assembly shall be
performed. The CVN test specin1ens shall be machined
frorn the welded test assembly in which the tensile test
specimens are machined.

174
Real Educational Services, Inc.
4.35.3 When CVN testing is a requiren1ent and a quali-
fied WPS exists which satisfies all requirements except
for CVN testing, it shall be necessary only to prepare an
additional test weldment with sufficient n1aterial to pro-
vide the required CVN test specin1ens. The test plate
shall be welded using that WPS, which conforms to the
limits of Tables 4.1, 4.2, and 4.5, plus those supplemen-
tary essential variables applicable only to CVN testing
(Table 4.6). A new or revised .PQR shall be prepared and
a new or revised WPS written to accornrnodate the quali-
fication variables for CVN testing.

175
Rea/Educanona/Ser~ce5;In~
4.35.5 'The standard 10 x IO mn1 specimen shall be used
where the test material thickness is 7/ 16 in. [ 11 mn1] or
greater. Sub-sized specin1ens shall be used where the test
1naterial thickness is less than 7/16 in. [ 11 mm], or where
the extraction of full-sized specimens is not possible due
to the shape of the weldment. When sub-sized specin1ens
are required, they shall be made to one of the dimensions
shown in Table 4.15. (Note: the largest possible speci-
n1ens shall be 111achined fron1 the qualification test
piece.)
