Course Outline

Welcome to English Literature 12!


Here, you will explore specific themes and genres through fiction or non-fiction literary works.
Our goal is to help you seek out topics that interest you, while allowing you to simultaneously
improve your language repertoire, literacy skills, and higher-level thinking skills.

This course aims to have students demonstrate and develop their skills in literature analysis and
understanding both fictional and non-fictional texts. The focus is on encouraging students to
dive deeply into the meaning and purpose of literature. Students will engage with a variety of
media in order to better understand novels and works such as Frankenstein, Shakespeare, and
many more. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace
and to provide an appreciation for literature.

Big Ideas

• Critically reading and analyzing a variety of texts allows us to access and deepen our
understanding of identity, unique and diverse perspectives, complex ideas, and our
connection to others and to the world.

• Engaged and educated world citizens question what they see, hear, read, and view;
additionally, they are aware that the study of literature helps in the pursuit to become
informed, educated, and contributing members of society.

• Text and language are socially, culturally, geographically, and historically constructed, thus
influence the way we perceive the world.

• Strengthening knowledge of language through grammar and language conventions, style


and form allows us to understand, analyze, and use a variety of literary, informational, and
stylistic elements and language according to purpose and audience.

• Self-reflection is an efficient method to promote learning and build understanding of our


individual strengths and challenges.
