Francis Nguyen Trong Tri, penname Han Mac Tu (September 22, 1912 - November 11, 1940) was a
Vietnamese poet. He was the most celebrated Vietnamese Catholic literary figure during the colonial era.
He was born at Le My Village, Dong Hoi District, Quang Binh Province. His pen name included: Minh
Due, Phong Tran, Le Thanh, and finally Han Mac Tu, by which name is known today. He grew up in a poor family,
his father having died when he was young. He showed poetic talent at a young age. When he met Phan Boi Chau,
he received encouragement and praise that made him well-known. He contracted leprosy in 1937, and was finally
hospitalized at Quy Hoa Hospital in September 1940, where he died two months later.
His many poems addressed to real or fictive women - in the manner of Giacomo Leopardi in the West, for
example - remain popular, and he is known as a love poet in Vietnam. His poems on folk subjects are also well-
known.
Han Mac Tu's early poems - praised by Phan Boi Chau - are famous for their purity of diction and form,
and show him to be a fluent Classicist with a strong interest in realistic subjects. Subsequently, his poetry showed
the influence of French Symbolism, and after he fell sick, became increasingly violent and despondent. Personal
despair combined with the search for poetic novelty.
led him to found the short-lived “Chaos” (Loạn) or “Mad” (Ðiên) school of poetry. More than a love poet, Han Mac
Tu was a Modernist, who sought to fuse, in a new poetic language, disparate traditions and experiences. Beginning
with poems that refreshed the Classical tradition, he went on to absorb the French influence, which he directed
toward the turbulence of his own painful history. His language, increasingly tortured, remained both Classical and
innovative throughout; and though a Catholic, he made frequent use of Buddhist ideas and imagery.

VII. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
There is nothing to suggest that Evelyn Glennie is profoundly deaf. She insists that her deafness is
irrelevant to her musicianship, but there is no doubt that her obvious handicap has turned a remarkable career into a
miraculous one.
She was eight when her hearing began to fail; by twelve she had lost it completely and feared she would
have to give up the music she loved. But a doctor’s suggestion that she should become an accountant rather than
follow a hopeless musical career strengthened her will to succeed.
She grew up on a farm in Scotland. From an early age her great love was the piano, and after enjoying the
audience applause at a prize-winning performance she decided on a career as a soloist. By then, however, her love
of the piano had been overtaken by her passion for playing percussion instruments like the drums, an almost
impossible task for a deaf person. ‘You need to be very sensitive - because you are dealing with literally thousands
of instruments, she says. ‘Anyone can strike something and get a sound but you have to learn to control it and that
can take a lifetime’s work.’
As it turned out, music was one of the most advantageous careers she could have chosen and is one reason
why her speech remains so extraordinarily correct, despite her deafness. ‘You can relate a lot of what you feel
through the instruments onto your own voice box, so you know how to pitch, how to adjust your voice,’ she says.
Occasionally she listens to recordings by holding a cassette player between her knees, interpreting the
vibrations and the shaking movements. Her deafness is one of the reasons for her unique style, for she can’t listen
and be influenced by other performances and she has often declared that getting her hearing back would be the
worst thing that could happen to her. ‘It would be like giving sight to a blind person who had fitted their life to what
they saw through their hands. Quite apart from that, I am so critical of what I do anyway that wouldn’t want to be
comparing myself to others.’
As a result of her devotion to her music and her determination to succeed, she has doubled the range of
works available for percussion music in Europe and introduced instruments previously unheard of in the west. She
has also asked composers to write more than fifty new pieces of music for these instruments, and has set up library
of three hundred works for other musicians to use.
