STUDENT GUIDEBOOK BASIC BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE MODULE, FMUI 2019-2020 4

INTRODUCTION

To be able to identify normal parameters of human body, structure and function, one should have
knowledge of Basic Biomedical Science. Understanding physico-chemical, structure and function of cell
including cell replication and proliferation, organization cell and human body, principles of homeostasis
and its parameters, and metabolism of cell are the foundation in the study of normal human body.

Various disorders may involve cells, tissues and organs which eventually lead to clinical signs and
symptoms, and these problems can only be understood by having knowledge of the normal
parameters of human body.

This module will provide such a comprehensive basic knowledge necessary as the foundation of
systematic research in medical field, and so students are adepts at managing medical and health
issues holistically and comprehensively.

This module is a first step knowledge to understand other modules in next semester. For examples,
Basic molecule of cell topic especially nucleic acid hereditary is a basic knowledge to understand
Molecular Cell Biology module in semester 2. Cell to cell communication topic is a basic knowledge for
Basic Human Neuroscience in semester 2. Fluid, electrolyte and acid balance in human body topic
plays a role to understand Renal and Body Fluids modul in semester 3. Metabolism process in cell topic
is a basic science to understand Metabolic Endocrine module in semester 5.

The Basic Biomedical Science is part of HEALTH SCIENCES stage, and held in first semester for 14
weeks, with 4-credit point load. All teaching and learning materials are accessible in SCeLE. By
the end of the module, student is expected to have the ability of explaining simulated healthy
conditions and have the skill to apply Basic Biomedical Science.

LEARNING METHOD

The main principal of learning strategy in Basic Biomedical Science module is student centered and
integrated with Question Based-Discussion (QBD) approach and self-directed learning (SDL). Sharing
and feedback from tutors as subject experts will follow the discussion. Lectures and practicals will
also be used systematically to facilitate the understanding of basic concepts.

METHOD

1.1. Lectures
This module will have 13 lectures (L1-L13), including Interactive Lectures (7 hours). Total
duration are 21 hours.
See List of Lecture (page 23).

1.2. Question Based-Discussion (QBD)

There are 10 QBDs (QBD 1-10) with total duration of 30 hours.
Each QBD will be conducted in Group Discussion (GD) consists of 10 students and 1 tutor
(subject expert). Prior to QBD that is the Day-2, students will access the questions
according to the topic provided in the Student Guide Book in SCeLE. Students
should at all time refer to SCOPE OF STUDY.

Students in each QBD will be divided into smaller groups consist of 2-3 people, to work out
the questions. On the day of the QBD, students will discuss their findings with their partners
within the small group, then later share with all students involved in the QBD. The tutor may
give inputs (See QBD-Guidelines: Attachment 1 page 34, and QBD-List of Questions:
Attachment 2 page 36).

1.4. Self-Directed Learning (SDL)

SDL is a free time allocated within the program that allows students to work out the
tasks. During SDL students can work individually or with their peers in the library
to access textbooks, journals, or others and can also browse the Internet. Some lecture
and reading materials are provided in SCeLE, which can be used during this time
Total SDL provided is 58 hours (SDL1 – SDL52).

1.5. Practical
Laboratory practice will be held in 7 occasions (P1-P7) with total of 21 hours.
The departments involved are Biology integrated with Microbiology and
Parasitology; Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology, Histology and Anatomy.

STUDENT GUIDEBOOK BASIC BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE MODULE, FMUI 2019-2020 15

Students will be divided into small group consisting approximately 10 people.
Prior to the laboratory practice, students should have read the Laboratory Guidebook.
During Laboratory session, each student should be actively involved, work out the
tasks and have discussions with the tutor. Student should also take Post-test at the end
of laboratory session. Pre-test is maybe held prior to laboratory practice. See List of Practical
page 26.

1. Feedback
Aimed to provide input toward both students and the module team by assessing the
process and results gained by the students.

3.1. Formative evaluations: 2 sessions (computer based, allocated time, independent)

3.2. Observations: students activity during QBD and students task are evaluated by tutors

QUESTION BASED-DISCUSSION GUIDELINES

Question Based-Discussion (QBD) is a learning method used in this module in which the design is
according to Collaborative Learning

As per definition, Collaborative learning is an umbrella term for a variety of approaches in education
that involve joint intellectual effort by students or students and teachers. It refers to methodologies
and environments in which learners engage in a common task in which each individual depends on
and is accountable to each other. It involves use of small groups so that all students can maximize
their learning and that of their peers. It is a process of shared creation: two of more individuals
interacting to create a shared understanding of a concept, discipline or area of practice that none
had previously possessed or could have come to on their own. Collaborative learning activities can
include collaborative writing, group projects, and other
activities.http://sydney.edu.au/education_social_work/learning_teaching/ict/theory/collaborative_lear
ning.shtml(cited on16 July 2012)

Basically, in the Collaborative Learning, student is the center of learning process and so it is expected
that the student will develop active learning and independent learning skills through small group
discussion. Each of individual in the small group has responsibility as well as the opportunity to
contribute the information, knowledge, experience, ideas, opinions, and skills to the member of the
group. Also, they have the responsibility to advance the learning process for other group members.
Interconnection and interdependence are the main character in this learning method.
Module Basic Biomedical Science will employ student active learning approach that is Question
Based-Discussion (QBD) ©Lucky H Moehario.
In each QBD, students will be given some tasks/questions in order to learn and gain knowledge
about particular topic(s).

The procedures of the QBD are as follow:

Tasks/questions should be accessed from the SCeLE (BBS module) 2 days prior to the
discussion.
Students will be divided into small group contain 2-3 people. Each individual in the small group is
responsible to work out a question or some questions.

STUDENT GUIDEBOOK BASIC BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE MODULE, FMUI 2019-2020 30

The QBD session is 3 hours.

The First hour: students will complete the information of his/her tasks, have the discussion on the
specific topics, and understand the topics. Students may find through textbooks, journals, or
websites.

The second hour: students of the small group will share the information/knowledge about
particular topics to other members of the other small group. This is an open discussion; every
student should actively participate in it. The tutor will observe the discussion and make some notes.

The third hour: tutor will give clarification and feed back

During all times in the discussion, students will be observed and monitored by the tutor and
evaluated. Students’ self-assessment will also be evaluated.
Finally, students should always check the timetable for incoming QBD and make some preparations
prior to the QBD.
