WORKERS ON BOARD AND THEIR DUTIES

In the world of shipping, especially commercial ships, there are levels of position in each
ship. Usually based on experience and certificates held as a consideration. The highest
position on the ship is:
Captain. (Master) He is the leader on the ship who is also the representative of the company
on the ship. He is fully responsible for everything on board.
2. Chief Engineer. This is one level below the Master. He is in charge of all the machinery on
board.
3. First Mate (Chief Officer). He is under the Master and is responsible for the death on
board, including the stability of the ship and the security of the cargo.
4.Mualim 2 (Second Officer). He is responsible for matters of navigational equipment on
board, including Radar, GPS, AIS, Maps along with Map Plotting (making coordinate lines to
the destination island). He is also responsible for the supply of medicines and the cleaning of
the ship.
5. 3rd Mate (Third Officer). Responsible for safety equipment, which includes lifebuoys, life
jackets, lifeboats and their equipment.
6. Engineer 2 (Second Engineer) is responsible under the Chief Engineer/KKM for the
maintenance of the Main Propulsion Machine and its supporting tools, and the availability of
the amount of fuel on board.
7. Machinist 3 (Third Engineer) is responsible for auxiliary machinery, including lighting
engines, anchor engines, and the availability of lubricating oil quantities.
8. Engineer 4 (Fourth Engineer) is responsible for pump engineering both in the engine room
and on the deck which supports the ship's operations.
9. Bosun/Serang (Botswain) As the head of the daily work on the ship, who is responsible for
the cleanliness of the ship, and rigging matters and is responsible for his work to the 1st
Mate.
10. Engine Foreman (Engine Foreman) Head of daily work in the engine room, and is
responsible for his work to machinists 1.
11. Jurumudi (Able bondied) carry out daily duties and daily watch as well as sea watch
while the ship is at the dock or sailing. While sailing, as the driver of the ship, he followed
orders from the pilot or officer on duty at the time. Usually there are 3 people and carry out
guard for 4 hours while the ship is sailing.
12.Juru oil (Oiler). Working to assist machinists in the engine room for the smooth operation
of ship machinery. Carry out the order of the machinist or guard officer.
13. Sailor. Carry out daily work orders from Bosun/Serang. The sailors did not carry out the
guard.
14. Wipeers. Carry out daily work duties from the Foreman.
15. Cook (Chief Cook). Chief cook for the ship's crew and is responsible for overall kitchen
inventory and managing food consumption finances.
16. Waiter (Room Boy) . Assist the Chef in preparing cooking utensils and keeping the
kitchen clean, along with its equipment. Thus the duties and names of positions on
commercial ships in general
