CST Essay 2

I do believe that science is morally important. Studying branches of science is what

makes the world function, and offers better quality of life for many people. When you think of

Catholic Social Teaching principles such as community and the common good, solidarity, and

rights and responsibilities, this idea becomes even more apparent. I also believe this principles

outline scientists’ ethical responsibilities. God is the creator of this world, and science should

follow this principles that are based off of His word. In terms of community and the common

good, this principle outlines how all scientific and technological advances should be made, and

that is with others’ wellbeing in mind. The principle of solidarity states that we are our brothers’

and sisters’ keepers, so advances in the realm of preventing climate change are of upmost

importance specifically. Rights and responsibilities tells of how each individual has rights that

must be respected, and each individual has the right to live without fear of problems caused by

others. I believe each of these principles not only lays the groundwork for scientific

advancements and their purposes, but also how scientists should think when providing solutions

to overcome problems.

Overall, my views on this topic have remained the same, but its importance has grown

exponentially. As someone who desires to enter a profession in medical science, I will think of

CST principles before any choice I make in the field. While scientists should keep these ideas

close to their hearts, so should everyone else who is responsible for new ideas in this world. I

believe CST provides a great framework that gives added purpose to not just scientists, but

every individual. Minimizing our impact on the environment is just the tip of the iceberg, as

divisive thoughts have taken over many minds. Coming together as a collective to stop this

problem is a great way to apply CST to a major real life problem. More action in general needs

to be taken to assist the poor and misfortuned as well. In conclusion, the ideas of CST should

be more relevant than they ever have been in today’s society.
