Instruction: Answer the following.

1. Describe the following epidemiologic measures and provide their corresponding formula:

a. Mortality Rate – a measure of the frequency of occurrence of death in a defined

population during a specified interval.
a. Formula:
Total Number of New Deaths in a Defined Time Period X 100
Total Number of Persons in the Population at the Beginning of this Period

b. Morbidity Rate – a measure of the proportion of people in a specific geographical location

who contracted a particular disease during a specific period. It indicates the frequency of
the disease appearing in a population.
a. Formula:
Number of Affected Individuals
Total Number of Individuals Within a Specific Population X 100

c. Natality Rate – is the measure of production of new individuals in a population during a

unit in time. It is an important contributing factor for population growth.
a. Formula:
Number of Birth Per Unit Time X 100
Average Population

d. Prevalence Rate – the proportion of persons in a population who have a particular disease
or attribute at a specified point in time or over a specified period of time.
a. Formula:
Number of Existing Case + New Cases
X 100
Population at Risk During Same Period of Time
e. Incidence rate – a measure of the average speed at which the disease is spreading.
a. Formula:
Number of New Cases of a Disease During a Given Period X 100
Population at Risk During a Given Period

2. Describe the following measures of association and provide their corresponding formula.

a. Absolute risk – the probability or chance of an event. It is usually used for the number of
events, such as disease, that occurred in a group, divided by the number of people in that
group.
a. Formula:
Individuals Presenting the Event
Individuals in Follow – Up in that Group

b. Relative Risk – compares the risk of a health event such as disease, injury, risk factor, or
death, among one group with the risk among another group.
a. Formula:
Incidence in the Exposed
Incidence in the Non-Exposed

c. Risk ratio – ratio of the risk of an event in one group (exposure or intervention) to that in
another group (control).
a. Formula:
Risk (Cumulative Incidence) in Exposed Group
Risk (Cumulative Incidence) in Unexposed Group
