GEAR PUMP
A. Drive shaft- rive shaft, driveshaft, driving shaft, propeller shaft (prop shaft), or Cardan shaft is a
mechanical component for transmitting torque and rotation, usually used to connect other components
of a drive train that cannot be connected directly because of distance or the need to allow for relative
movement between them.
B. Seal-A mechanical seal is simply a method of containing fluid within a vessel (typically pumps, mixers,
etc.) where a rotating shaft passes through a stationary housing or occasionally, where the housing rotates
around the shaft.
C. Mounting flange- mounting flange is a metal threaded ring with several holes on the perimeter which
are used to secure the flange to a lens board. It is permanently attached to the front of a lens board with
screws. Flanges are frequently missing from their lenses.
D. Pressure port- A gear pump produces flow by carrying fluid between the teeth of two meshing gears.
The chambers formed between adjacent gear teeth are enclosed by the pump housing and side plates, also
called wear or pressure plates.
E. Bushings-Pump Bushing Bearing. Bearings are small parts of pump systems that play a critical role. They
bear the load of the pump, allowing rotation. They must be properly lubricated and temperatures
monitored to prevent failure.
F. Suction pump-Gear pumps use the actions of rotating cogs or gears to transfer fluids. The rotating
element develops a liquid seal with the pump casing and creates suction at the pump inlet.
G. Drive gear-The gear mounted to this shaft (driving gear) engages the other gear (driven gear) Fluid on
the inlet side flows into and is trapped between the rotating gear teeth and the housing. The fluid is carried
around the outside of the gears to the outlet side of the pump.
H. Idler gear-The driven or idler gear (that meshes with the power or driver gear) also revolves with the
rotation of the power gear, but it rotates in the reverse direction. When these two gears start to rotate, a
partial vacuum starts generating on the suction side of the pump.
I. Case seal-The fluid is carried by the gears to the discharge side of the pump, where the meshing of the
gears displaces the fluid. ... The mechanical clearances are small— in the order of 10 µm. The tight
clearances, along with the speed of rotation, effectively prevent the fluid from leaking backwards.
